Why we need to draft a QB.

In my humble opinion, just looking at our past 25 years of drafting show the obvious reasons why we have not had a
quality QB in Miami since the departure of the great Dan Marino.

1982 Draft- Zero QBs drafted
1983 Draft- Dan Marino- Round 1-Pick #27-PITT
1984 Draft- Dean May - Round 5-Pick#138-LOUISVILLE

1985 Draft- Zero QBs drafted
1986 Draft- Jeff Wickersham- Round 10-Pick#274-LSU
1987 Draft- Jim Karsatos -Round 12-Pick#322-OHIO STATE
1988 Draft- Kerwin Bell-Round 7-Pick#180-Florida
1989 Draft- Zero QBs drafted
1990 Draft- ScottMitchell-Round 4-Pick#93- UTAH

1991 Draft- Zero QBs drafted
1992 Draft- Mark Barsotti-Round 11 Pick#296-FRESNO STATE
1993 Draft- Zero QBs drafted
1994 Draft- Zero QBs drafted
1995 Draft- Zero QBs drafted- DON SHULAS LAST DRAFT YEAR
1996 Draft- Zero QBs drafted
1997 Draft- Zero QBs drafted
1998 Draft- JOHN DUTTON- Round 6 Pick#172-NEVADA
1999 Draft- Zero QBs drafted
2000 Draft- Zero QBs drafted

2001 Draft- JOSH HEUPEL- Round6 Pick#177-OKLAHOMA
2002 Draft- Zero QBs drafted
2003 Draft- Zero QBs drafted
2004 Draft- Zero QBs drafted
2005 Draft- Zero QBs drafted 2006 Draft- Zero QBs drafted

So just looking at the above tells the story in my opinion. Don Shula spent alot more energy drafting a suitable backup to Marino from 1984-1994 by drafting 6 QBs over that 10 years. Since Shula left and Marino retired, neither Johnson, Wanny, or Saban ever spent a first day draft pick to find a quality QB thru the draft. They all elected to solve our QB problem via free agency and the result has been zero playoff appearances since 2001. I think only 4 other teams in the entire league can boast the same honor. The only DAY ONE drafted QB over the last 25 years has been MARINO!!! Think about that. The next best pick was Round 4-Scott Mitchell who proved to be an important quality backup to Marino and we have Shula to thank for this as well. Since 1993, the highest pick we have spent on QB was #173!!! No wonder we have QB issues.Since Marino in 1983, only once have we drafted a QB in the first 100 picks in the entire draft for that year. Seems to me all the good QBs in this league almost always come to their current team via the draft.

I hope we do something a little different this year, and being that Cameron is an offensive minded coach, I hope he challenges the above Dolphin draft tendencies this year and makes a bold move in the draft to move up and possibly grab Quinn form Detroit. If we move up by giving away both of our second rounders and swapping first picks, then that is fine with me. I know we have needs on an aging defensive line and below average offensive line. I would rather secure a stud QB for the next decade and go without a tackle and CB for another year if that's what it takes. Few teams find their QB problem solved via free agency and god knows the Dolphins over the last 12 years have not been able to do it with success. Maybe its time to try a different strategy. Here is hoping that we do.

I agree that we haven't used enough picks on QB's,let alone high picks.....of course there wasn't a real need to draft QB's all that much when we had Dan in his prime...we needed the picks for defence but since he's been gone we haven't spend the picks.....when Wanny was the coach we didn't have many picks cos he wasted them all away.....I'm sure things will change with Cam and Muller making the choices now.

Ozzy rules!!

i agree and if the dolphins don't, i will become confused why they neglect the QB position in the draft, matter of fact i wouldn't mind them drafting 2

i would love to see trent edwards drafted..he could be a project qb and would most likely be there in the 3rd rd..by drafting him in the 3rd the phins could use there 1st rd and both 2nd rd picks to concentrate on OL and Wr..people dont know much about him cause he played for a stinky stanford team and yes he ahd injury problems but he has the potential...i fear that some fans r saying no to him cause they dont really know who he is...just because he didnt play on espn or abc every weekend i doubt few saw him ever play..the chances i saw him play i was quite impressed on how he handled himself in the pocket..also lets remember those who love stanton and yes i like him to i wanna point out michigan st. stunk to and both the O-Lines that these qbs played for sucked big time..so before u say no to edwards make sure u know who he really is..a few weeks ago i saw a thread about kolb and then beck, but i hardly know them and never saw them play so therefore i didnt go in the those threads and tear them apart..that would show iggnorance on my behalf..i just ask u do the same with edwards...

From the above poster, I do like the Edwards idea, Stanton or Kolb, I'm willing to give those guys a shot. I think the only way we should get Quinn is if he falls to us. I don't think we should trade away a possible draft pick just to move up 4 or 5 spots. Just get a player to fill a spot like OT, DT, or WR in the first and then make the move to get a QB in the second round. Better move IMO.

In my opinion we aren't in a very good spot to draft a QB this year. Quinn and Russell seem to only be options if we trade up. The next best QB's are Stanton and Edwards, both of whose stocks seem to be on the rise. Both will probably get picked a round earlier than they should because of how they performed in shorts and a t-shirt during workouts. I see both of them as 3rd round prospects likely to be drafted in the second round.

After that the most popular options seem to be John Beck, Troy Smith and Kevin Kolb. Beck's stock also seems to be on the rise and could be a decent developmental Qb. Smith is a proven winner who I also wouldn't mind if we could get him late enough. Kolb strikes me as nothing more than a system QB who will struggle in the pros.

With that said, I would prefer we trade down pick up o-line help in round one. Grab either a WR or another o-lineman at 40, and then draft either Stanton or Edwards if either of them are still available at 60. Anything sooner than that is a reach IMO.
