The Marshall trade refreshes what many have thought all along - that Miami was the place best for Peyton.  The charade with the Cards and the Broncos certainly cast some doubt on what we knew to be true on paper.  Just assume for a moment that Peyton/Wayne to Miami is a done deal and that the Marshall trade, though long requested, is the first part of the plan.

There are two major reasons why delaying the official signing is beneficial to us.

1)  Tampering.  If this whole thing was in the works long ago, as many suspect, the Phins and Manning need to do everything in their power to avoid tampering charges/accusations/investigations.  Manning has done his part by convincingly visiting the Broncs and Cards.  The Phins attempted to do their part by going into lockdown mode so that none of their plans (including Marshall trade, any restructuring, etc.) came to light.

2)  Once teams in the AFCE find that Manning is joining the division, they are going to rush to tool against him.  Mario Williams, a foe of Manning's, would obviously better serve our interests NOT being in the division.  Likewise, we'd rather not give the Pats, Jets, and Bills a pressing reason to upgrade their secondaries and pass rush via top free agents.  Just delaying the official announcement or indications allows top free agents (e.g. Williams) to go elsewhere.  This is actually a big deal competitively.

Just some thoughts based on the assumption that Manning will be a Phin.

If something has been agreed upon then this makes sense and the FO will look like geniuses. If the dolphins are taking this strategy without absolute assurance from Manning then they run the risk of being left out in the cold after all the other top FAs have signed, and then this would top even the harbaugh debacle.

Very thoughful. However, keep in mind that the panic of adding Manning to the division could cause teams like the Jets to grossly overpay for Mario Williams, leaving their other numerous holes unfilled. Just depends on what you think the mentality will be.

even more, AZ owes kolb 7 mil in like 2 days. If they pay him, he stays.

It really is simple deduction and what a few of us have been saying I still don't care either way if we sign him I am impartial to a 36 yr old coming off 4 surgeries but Ross needs this BAD!!!!

BTW - Winston is so badly needed regardless of the QB -

at this point....Im not so sure anymore...just upset about losing Marshall, what if ,we dont sign Peyton either, then what?

You make some excellent points, although Mario Williams is already visiting Buffalo and Matt Moore is still our QB

Agreed, but remember, if you're adding Manning, priority #1 is keeping him healthy and upright.  Williams in the division is directly antagonistic to priority #1, no matter how much a team hurts itself to get him.

I'm working off the assumption that Manning is our QB and we need Williams to get the hell out of Buffalo and visiting some other teams!  If Manning to Miami is confirmed, Williams doesn't leave Buffalo.

All that sounds great, but at this point, I'm not sure our front office is capable of coming up with a plan that smart. We'll see.

Either they're pretty smart (and I'm willing to call them smart if Peyton is part of the planning), or pretty dumb.  We will find out soon enough.

what do you mean by "long requested"? Marshal wanted out? Why do I have the sinking feeling that we made this horrible trade and we are going to be spurned by Manning? Why wouldn't you wait until Manning is on the team before dealing Marshal? Don't get it...
