Last night I had posted a thread insisting it should be WR, but now I've done a 180 degree u-turn... now first, let me preface by saying that you don't take an O lineman at all costs, but given equal players at different positions, our O line is more needy, along with greater upside.
The reason I say this is because I was researching the Pro Bowl roster, and at WR only 4 of the 8 guys were 1st round picks. Same deal with CB's, 4 of 6 1st round picks, others in round 2 or 3... also keep in mind we got Sam Madison and Pat Surtain in the 2nd round. But the key here is 100%of starting tackles in this years Pro Bowl are 1st round picks. If we could find an anchor at LT for the next 10 years, we've gotta do it. It will help each of our skill position guys that much more... not to mention, history and this years pro bowl show that most top-flight, starting LT's are found in the first round of the draft, within the first couple LT's taken!
(Also, don't say, "but what about so-and-so drafted in round 4 in the 2002 pro bowl?" Of course there are exceptions, but this seems to be the general pattern for LT's, and best way to get a pro bowl guy)

I can't argue with your reasoning for wanting to go O-Line in the first but right now there's only one OT worthy of being picked in the Top 10. That could change after all the workouts and Combine results are in. If we could find a draft day trade partner and move down, that would be great then someone like Levi Brown might be an option.

I'm completely with you in regards to trading down a few spots, grabbing an extra pick, and looking at Levi Brown. However, Sam Baker of USC is considered the 2nd rated underclassmen by many "experts", of those who could declare for the draft.

Since Baker is considered a top 10 pick if he comes out, then I would be completely fine with Thomas or Baker as our #1 pick, or trade down for Levi... although I just found a couple pieces that say Baker is in fact most likely going to stay for another year... dangit.

i wouldn't be opposed to drafting ol in the 1st 5 rounds. w/ the current guys we have and 5 top picks we would almost be assured to fixing our ol woes. and have depth for the next 5 years. w/ a great ol everything else becomes easier. passing is easier, running is easier, defense is easier because offense is on the field longer.

I'd personally want Miami to get an OT in round 1, but you've got to be realistic if the guy is there or not.

Completely agree. Again, I would love to pick up an extra 2nd or 3rd rounder by trading down. The one thing I think we should not do is trade up and give up another pick...

Joe Thomas is the top left tackle and he will be gone by Arizona. Tony Ugoh from Arkansas is also considered by Mel Kiper as a top ten senior. Let's see where he falls after the Juniors declare. If he is not rated as a top ten pick (where we are) then there is no reason to take an O-Lineman there. We can get a guy for OL in round 2. I would like to look at Samuel as a Free Agent to answer the CB problem. So, it comes down to a QB in round 1 if Thomas and Ugoh are not available and we sign Samuel. Drafting offense in round 1 and 2 wouldn't be a bad move at all.

Link to Mel's senior draft board as of Dec 21st:

I am not big on drafting WR's high, but I would not be opposed to get Dwayne Jarrett if he is indeed a playmaker or somehow Calvin Johnson falls to us.

I think we should draft the best player at any position if you know they are studs and will start right away. In order of need we are:

1. Oline
2. LB
3. WR (Chris Chambers is not cutting it)
4. DB
5. QB (everything will bank on Culpepper next year but we need someone to groom)
6. TE (Saban will look for more TE's and ones who can block and catch better than Mcmicheal).
7. DT/DE -some people say this is an area of need, maybe, maybe not, depends on who we resign or not.

Another thing to consider is free agency. Will we make a big splash for one or two good Oline in Free Agency? If we do, then it will be much easier to draft other positions in this draft. This Oline simply needs a LT and LG.

This team doesn't need to go out and draft a Pro Bowl LT. It just needs to find a good one. This team would be better off strengthening itself up the middle.

Take a look at the teams that have won Super Bowls in the past couple of decades and tell me how many had franchise LT's. Not too many.

There are a lot of good LT's in this draft, so we should be able to nab one in the second round.

We need a playmaker that high in round 1, whether it's a WR, CB or defensive lineman.

I'm gonna watch the Penn State-Tennessee bowl game, especially Levi Brown and Arron Sears. Either one of these guys would look good wearing a Dolphin uniform. You can take Brown with the 9th pick or go with something else in the first and take Arron Sears in the 2nd round. Keep an eye them.
