John Beck is wearing #9 because #12 is obviously unavailable since that is the retired number Griese wore. John chose #9 because though he played a lot of football growing up, he played even more baseball. As a baseball player/fan one of his favorite movies was "The Natural." In the film the title character, Roy Hobbs, wore the #9. This is John's reasoning for choosing that jersey number.

I find it interesting that in the movie Roy Hobbs is an older than average rookie, as is John Beck. Regardless of age, he still performs “lights out” on the field (pun intended for those who know the film).

Here’s to hoping John is also a “Natural” as the Dolphin signal caller.

Note: Drew Brees and Jim Mcmahon also #9's

PS: I’ve played catch with Beck on a few occasions (both football and baseball) and I can personally attest that he throws the ball SO UNBELIEVABLY HARD.

Wow neat stuff, thanks for sharing. Great movie too, I've watched it a buch of times. It will take me a while to get use to the 9 at QB again. I hope John erases some awful nightmares I have about that number.

I like that reason a lot better then the "I want to be like Jay Fiedler" reason.

I hope his similarities with Roy Hobbs are "lights out"

What was Fiedler's number? :err: Hope that is not part of his reason.Good story none the less.

Jim McMahon was a childhood hero of John's.

He picked #9 to remind us that we passed Quinn at 9 for him.

SBN3YEARS... look at your mock draft and look at the dolphins and ask yourself, whos is better?

become a browns fan if ur that high on quinn.

That's cool...I hope Beck works out for the team.

Whatever makes Beck think he can play better is alright by me.. I don't care if he's #4834759873

why? his mock is horrible.. wrong on so many fronts.. podesh went in the 4th.. figurs in the 3rd...quinn @ 22, etc etc etc...but he does get props for having it up...but man, i would delte delete delete...lol.

Cool post...much appreciated!
I also remember Louis Oliver wore 25 and was picked at #25 in the first round. I hope things work out with Beck...
I have no doubt he will be a better passer to us than ol Fiedler.... Is he even on a roster anywhere??
