Even Im getting tired of all this Henne vs. Beck talk on here. It seems like people are arguing over two QBs who most likely wont see the field in the regular season unless McCown gets injured.
Josh McCown is a pretty good QB in the NFL IMHO. There is obviously something Parcells likes in him, otherwise he wouldnt have signed him. It wasnt just to fill out the depth chart. He selected this guy out of a pool of FA QBs, all of whom he couldve offered contracts. Granted the FA pool wasnt spectacular, this is the guy Parcells chose. At the very least McCown represents a more than capable backup on any NFL team.
Looking at his career, the guy played pretty well in Arizona. Honestly, I feel like if there wasnt pressure on Dennis Green to play Warner because of the contract the FO there gave him, McCown wouldve stayed the starter. He outplayed Warner that season.
In Detroit, I feel like he shouldve started over Kitna. The thing about Detroit is the team is ran by a bunch of morons. So, you cant really put much stock into any decisions they make as to who's the better QB. Kinda like a Cam Cameron pick.
Last year he STARTED for a pathetic Oakland team that is being ran into the ground by an owner who is a control freak and his time has passed. He is basically the laughingstock of the league in regards to owners, much like Detroit in regards to FO's. Nevertheless, the coach there decided McCown was the best QB they had and started every game in which he was available to play in 100% healthy.
So you guys can bicker over 2 QBs who most likely wont sniff the field all you want. As far as this season goes, be ready to support Josh McCown. I think we need to get behind this guy and quit sleeping on him.
Now in respect to who will be the QB of the future, you can bicker over Henne and Beck all you want, but the reality is Parcells has spoken. Even though it was Gene Upshaw's voice, it was Parcell's mind who had whomever write down on the card the words Chad Henne QB, Michigan and hand it to Upshaw who spoke for him.
Chad Henne is the QB who Parcells wants and plans to be our QB when we make our run in 1-3 more seasons. Thats why he selected him. But, before we declare him the great one, lets wait and see him play in games that count before we swear he is as good as we might hope.
This is the same trap Beck lovers fell into. Now they are still in love with the guy despite what they witnessed last season. He couldnt have performed any worse. Im not talking about the subpar or even really bad play of his teammates. Im talking about John Beck's play. The things he had complete control over that had nothing to do with how well his OL blocked or his receivers played. In those aspects of the game he failed miserably. This dosent mean Im not or wasnt rooting for the guy, he is a phin. Its just how it was.
The last thing I will comment on is this ridiculous notion that Beck should start so everyone can "see what he can do" or be given a legit shot now that the players around him are better. This is just absurd. If John Beck will start it will be because HE EARNED IT. Secondly, why can the FO and coaches not decide whether he is good enough to start based on camp, preseason, and practice? Why must he start in order for them to figure out if he can cut it?
And finally, if Beck were good enough to start the reality is the FO wouldve used a pick as high as 57 on something besides a QB if they felt he was good enough to start. First of all they already signed a more than capable backup in McCown. Secondly, they reviewed the film and have had plenty of time to work with Beck already this offseason. Im sure they have decided at this point if they feel Beck is starter material for this season. And with all the needs of this team talent wise and how much talent was available at that pick, there is no way they spend that pick on a QB if they felt they had the guy they wanted at that position already. No way.
So if Beck is to start this year, he will have definately earned it because he will have to show the coaches and FO something he obviously hasnt shown them AS OF YET, that makes them think they can send him out there and he will help us win games. Debasteabone said it best when he said you guys are about a week too late. The whole argument over Beck/Henne is even wearing me out because its gotten to the point it is getting clouded with things such as how tall a guy is compared to his listed combine height. Please. Can he play or not? Thats the issue.
In closing you guys need to quit SLEEPING on Josh McCown, stop acting like Henne is the answer we have been looking for when we just dont know that yet, and PLEASE stop pretending that Beck should start for ridiculous reasons that he needs a "chance to prove". He will have his chance. He has had his chances already. He has been with the coaches and FO for a few months now.
The fact is John Beck is seriously behind the 8 ball when it comes to having the edge on being the guy for this team in the future. Henne is the hand picked guy of the people currently in charge.
Beck will have his shot so long as he is here. In the NFL things happen. As long as he is on the roster there are plenty of practices and preseason games. The coaches will be there. Guys get hurt. Things dont always go to plan either. Henne could blow, McCown could get hurt. Lots of things can happen. If Beck is as good as some of you think he is, the cream will rise. He wont be cheated of an opportunity. However, with the FO selecting Henne, its obvious that as of today, John Beck has yet to really impress the current FO with the opportunities he has had so far.
