Ok first off, I have over 15 years of football playing under my belt but ALWAYS been a defensive player and dont know nearly as much offensively. So looking for some offense guru's. We were getting killed with that rush and I dont understand why we didnt spread them out or even if we stayed with the tight ends in still why no shotgun?

I was in the chatroom during the whole game and brought this comparison up... I'm a HUGE Florida State fan and back in the day of spurrier and Danny Whuerful (sp?) my Noles sacked him something like 10 times in one game as he was under center the whole game. When we met again in the bowl game all spurrier did was make the adjustment to the shotgun and we could no longer get to him as he could now see the rush coming and get rid of the ball quicker as he didnt have to take the drop backs....So why did we NOT make this adjustment that seems so simple? Any thoughts? Please no"because the coaches suck" type responses make it something smarter than what a 10 year old could say thanks...

I'm right there with you chub22,i don't understand why we in max protect mode all day long.....Bring in 4 or 5 receivers and catch the ball over the middle,as did the tight ends did today!!!!And as far as i saw,Ronnie Brown is back...Get him the damn ball!!!

40 some views and no one has any clue?? Yeah I dont get it bro max protect is there for obvious reasons but spreading it out or keeping the TE's in on shotgun can give you advantages too

Because instead of throwing three yard passes, Pennington would now have to throw six-eight yard passes. Well beyond his range.

The one thing that sticks out about the whole shotgun formation is it takes away from the play action which pennington is great at. Thats all I can think of...

Maybe the coaches figured that we are deep at DB and they didn't think leaving the QB exposed for that amount of time would be a good idea.We carried 9 defensive backs this season. Our pass rush was pretty effective even with the max protect except in the 4th when the heat started to wear on them a little and they went into prevent.

Hmm, that's a good question. I don't think it was about play action since our running game was ineffective all game and the Jets weren't biting on it.

I would hazard a guess that it was probably more of a QB to WR timing issue. With so many young receivers on the team, perhaps the staff felt it was easier for them and Chad to maintain rhythm by maintaining the 3 step drop.

It may be just as simple as the fact that we are built to be a power Run offence first... the shotgun is primarily a pass first formation meaning we might not actually have very many sets out of the shotgun installed. It really is a formation designed to take shots downfield. This might be why as in your example Spurrier was able to respond IN THE NEXT GAME... When he installed those set ups.

I think that they had planned to stay committed to the run and not counted on trying to win on Pennington's arm... In fact I think they were attempting to actually use a simple passing game in order to open up the run.. But when they failed to establish the run early, the wheels came off... I think that today's game was not the way our guys had planned it.

Lastly some Qb's flourish in the shotgun and some struggle with it... Without knowing Pennington's tendencies (other then the obvious) there may be a reason they stayed away from it in his style of play.

They mentioned during the broadcast that Favre said he's learned about 75% of the jets playbook. If Pennington hasn't learned all of ours yet, either, maybe they didn't want to take away his play-action security blanket. He goes into the shotgun and the jets DL will just pin their ears back and rush all day. We were having trouble with pass protection as it was, why telegraph it?

Not that the original question was a bad one, it would give Pennington more time, but maybe we won't see that for a few weeks until the pass protection stabilizes.

Lack of shotgun completely baffled me. The entire offense completely baffled me. The Jest dared us to throw beyond 10 yards and we rarely did. We should have spread out once in awhile and used shotgun.

speaking of playaction.. why were we still using it late in the game in our 2 minute drill. Made no sense to me and definitely wasn't effective.

ok I wasn't even thinking about the playaction being taken away thats a good point BUT still baffled why we didnt use it then later in the 4th when running wasnt an option so no one was fooled anyway plus you need a good running game in any quarter for playaction to be effective and our run game was non existant
