According to John Clayton, among others, Del Rio won't last the day in Jacksonville, is presently being courted by USC to replace Pete Carroll and if that doesn't work out, will be on the street. If he's fired he gets $15mil which would make his crash back to coordinator level less painful. This guy has installed stalwart defenses wherever he's been including Carolina as DC. We can't hire him away from Jacksonville or he forfeits the big money but maybe can send some sort of message that if he doesn't accept USC, he won't be on the street for long. The FO should make this happen... while Crennel is our best option, I think JDR is our best realistic option.

My biggest question off the bat is, is he a 3-4 defense guy? You know that is requirement #1 for Parcells and Co..

Will he take a DC position. Im sure Buff will try to scoop him up.

exactly, we have to look at 3-4 guys cuz despite some people might wanting to move back to the 4-3 base, its not going to happen. Jack is a 4-3 guy, a damn good one, but not the right fit here.

You have to be kidding...

NO WAY... He takes a step BACKWARDS...
Especially when he has USC waiting for him....

I can see it now... he comes to Miami as our coordinator and right before the season Zach Thomas comes from out of nowhere as a linebackers coach and impresses Sparano so much that he immediately elevates him to coordinator and tells JDR to ride off into the sunset. Deja vu all over again.

Why would I kid??? The 4-3 I can buy but if you think about it, the USC job is fraught with landmines. The boosters are as powerful and influential as anywhere else in the NCAA, the expectations are extremely high, a loss to UCLA is considered a "fire-worthy" offense, recruits are rethinking their commitments, Mike Garrett is not an easy guy to deal with by all reports, and not the least important, there may be a ****storm heading the way of the program as part of the basketball program blowback with Carroll and Bush having to now testify, the McKnight issue with possible crippling sanctions as a possibility. Carroll's path back to the NFL is now an exception thanks to the likes of Davis, Spurrier and Saban. Where does JDR go if he fails at USC?? And then of course, there's the scrutiny and exposure of USC being THE professional team in SoCal. How does that compare to Jacksonville?

Since taking over the Jags he has slowly driven a once good defense into the ground.

Their end of season rankings year by year since he got the in 03'

The last 3 years the Jags defense has started to fall apart and this is about the time his guys would have started to get playing time and most of Coughlin's had been faded out.
I understand this might just mean he's not great in the draft room (if he was even making the picks) and he would no longer have to worry about that but it's still not a great sign.

I was thinking same, but would he run 4/3 or 3/4.

Who knows what his status is, but either way, I don't expect him here.

I agree with your reasoning, the USC job looks like a coach killer in the near future. Too many questions with the NCAA probes and as you point out Garrett is no joy. Other than him just wanting that job in particuliar why would you really want to go there now?

In the end though, I think they will still go after a 3-4 defense guy first.

i think this has a lot more to do with personal decisions then his coaching ability.
