There has been a lot of conjecture of what the Fins should do for their GM position. There have been debates of the timing. There have been debates of power structure. There have been debates of who is talented enough to fill the position.
I have been pleased with who the Dolphins have interviewed. For example, Ray Farmer could be a fit and an excellent hire. However, as time goes on, I am also drawn to the idea of who fits best in the team's current structure. I want this team to win now, not later. It has become exhausting watching the offseason changes to the FO and coaching staffs over the past ten years.
Therefore, the more and more I think of it, I wonder if Brian Gaine is in fact the best fit. Without a doubt, people will holler that he is a "Jeff Ireland Clone", but that is not the case. Brian Gaine is his own man when it comes to football.
Here are some reasons Gaine might end up being the best fit:
* First and foremost, Gaine has an eye for talent. We are all screaming for the next GM to be a guy that can find great football players. Gaine can do that. There is talk he found Cam Wake in the CFL for instance. If the team is not looking for an overarching power broker in the GM post, Gaine is a fit an effective personnel boss that "works with others".
* He understands the dynamics between Joe Philbin and Dawn Aponte. Gaine could be promoted, allowed to pick the players and find an equilibrium within the FO. Without question Gaine already has a professional relationship already with Aponte. Therefore, there is no time wasted "getting to know" each other.
* I have said this since Philbin was hired, Gaine and Philbin have a common football nexus...Kirk Ferentz. Ferentz is one of Philbin's mentors and Gaine played for Ferentz at UMaine. I think they would work well with each other and find good football players that Philbin would feel he could coach up and utilize.
* Gaine was part of a turnarounds in New York and Dallas while he was with Bill Parcells.
* All this talk...and I have been a part of it...that the team has not had direction at the Senior Bowl is all for not because Gaine is there and already has an idea of what he wants to do.
* Finally, Gaine is very qualified to do this job. Other teams have been interested in him over the years as a case in point. Brian Gaine would be a solid selection and at the end of the day perhaps the best fit.
