I really don't understand why we would not use the tag this year. I understand that it is an issue to pay one of the players who is tag eligible that kind of money, (especially when they are not really top 5 players) but it is only a 1 year commitment. This gives you a little flexability in the rebuilding process. For instace lets say we were to use the tag on V.C.. Then it would not be a huge priority to replace him this year. We could address other areas on the team that are needed and if by chance in the draft that RT we had our eye on falls into a slot where we could pick him we could develop him for one year and let V.C. go next year or trade him later on in the year. This same scenario relates to anyone of the potential tag players. I just see it as a valuable tool in the rebuilding process because it does not put pressure on the future cap space that we have availiable now, and gives us the flexability to make decisions based on the long term rather the short term when it comes to FA and the draft. Another aspect that I consider is that Parcells and Ireland dont seem to bethe types that are going to burn through our cap space during this offseason alone, so I dont seen that cap hit of the tagged player being a huge concern this year. Any thoughts??

If none of our players are worth a top five contract why would we franchise them? Let them hit the FA market and sign them for less if we have interest in keeping them. I doubt any player we let hit the FA market will command a top 5 salary. I will grant you that letting them hit the FA market carries a risk of not being able to resign them but only if another team is willing to pay more. Additionally, who knows what is happening internally in regard to resigning and/or extending the players in question. Perhaps Carey and Bell are already in the process of resigning.

yeah and you do you replace them with? We're are creating a whole lot of holes by letting everybody walk.

Well Gross just got like 60 mill for 6 years from the Panthers. He was the top tackle and now that he's resigned, Carey is the top tackle available. There's no way that Carey goes for less then we could keep him for with the franchise tag. I don't see us spending all of our cap dollars just like we didn't last year so it makes no sense to me why we don't secure his services at an important position next instead of creating another hole on our line.

In addition, Bell is probably the top safety available and with our secondary as weak as it is, that's another spot where I don't see why we don't franchise him. No way we get him for less then we could if we franchise him.

I don't think we'll be keeping any of these guys if the deal isnt done before Feb. 27th

They are not going to overpay what someone is worth. They'll use that money on someone they see as worth their value. I would do the same thing.

Yesterday it was reported that Carey is close to re-signing. If he does, that's good. If not, they will find someone else to do the job. I have a lot of faith in the abilities of Parcells, Ireland and Sparano.

I agree with that. I think it's part of the culture that is changing with this new regime... we don't hand out blank checks to slightly above average players anymore.

We'll more then likely have the extra cap dollars just like we did last year so why not use it to franchise Carey with them. i'm not saying sign him to some crazy longterm deal. All I'm saying is franchise his for like 8 million which isn't crazy, draft his replacement and give the replacement a year to learn.

And when you say someone to replace him, who did you have in mind. If a free agent, they're still going to have to pay a decent amount because there aren't many out there and then you'll have to sign them to a multi year deal. If you're thinking draft, then great, but what are we going to have; pretty much a rookie at RG in Thomas and a rookie at RT. That should be fun.

Obviously they either don't feel Carey is worth top 5 money or are close to re-signing him. If Carey is close to re-signing why would they use it on him? All that accomplishes is bidding against themselves.

As for having fun with rookies, the rookie at left tackle did pretty damn good last year. As did the 2 rookies on the defensive line and the rookie kicker. Again, this front office knows what they are doing.

Actually, this should be encouraging news. This means one of two things.

It means that MIA is close enough on working out contracts with the players they are negociating with that they didn't feel a necessity to do so.

Or it could be that they wanted to send a message to the player that they were unwilling to use the franchise tag on a player because they don't want to have players that are "forced" to be here and not that they really 'wanted' to be here.

Now, the player basically only has at his leverage another whole week to decide 'does he really want to leave?' or is he willing to take a little less, but fair, in order to stay.

Them knowing they're going to resign him is the only thing that makes sense to me. I'd rather do the franchise route as I don't think he's worth big dollars so I'd rather take the approach of draft his replacement and just keep him for the next, but resigning is better then the alternative.

And C'mon about the rookie left tackle. He was the #1 pick. If we were to get a RT in the draft (probably in the 2nd round or later b/c there's no one worth drafting where we're at unless we get really lucky), we'd have a 2nd yr LT, a LG coming off of injury, an undersized C coming off of injury (praying we get Brown), a rookie RG coming off an injury, and a rookie RT. Yeah, our running game would be nonexistant next year.

To me it seems that they are completely comfortable letting these guys walk or that they believe that they can resign them. Because when you get to FA you are at the risk of being put in a position where you are have to overpay to get players to fill holes that you have. I am a firm believer in building through the draft but along with this comes being able to keep players that are affordable and productive. Carey just seems like a decent tag guy, 1 yr commitment for a reasonable price. The men in charge no what they are doing and have proven it to this point but as a huge fan I always have concern for what sometimes seems to be a good decision.

Here are 39 options that will all cost less than the $8.45M it would have taken to franchise Carey:

While I still believe they will resign him, if they don't I have more faith in their ability to determine what is best for this team than any poster on this sight, myself included.
