The sky is falling posts about Ricky this morning are just killing me. Ricky was an outstanding player and was very valuable to us, but the doomsday scenario people are talking about just isn't real...here's why:

1. Daunte Culpepper. Since Danny left, we have had virtually NO passing threat. Defenses almost completely ignored our passing game to stop the run. Ricky was beast enough to be successful despite that, but it wasn't enough to make it to the playoffs. That has all changed now. With the addition of CPep, defenses will have to respect the passing threat on EVERY down...and that is going to create a lot more running space for Ronnie and Sammy. The running game has already improved significantly, regardless who is carrying the ball.

2. Hudson Houck. This guy has made a respectable unit out of the equivalent of a sow's ear. This line showed dramatic improvement over the course of the year. If you noticed, Ricky's numbers aren't the only player's to improve later in the season...Ronnie's did too. The offensive line was a larger contributer to our running game's late season success than the talent at the RB position. Expect greater improvement from this unit this year.

3. Sammy Morris. I see lots of criticism here, citing his poor numbers in the one season he started for us. Were you people actually paying attention that year? Ricky quit. Our OL was the worst I have EVER seen...defenders were practically taking the handoff every play. Travis minor started, then fell to injury. We signed someone from ST. Luis...he lasted one game. Morris comes in mid-season, yet despite all the negatives, he still manages to play decently, and actually started coming on at the end of the season. There is absolutely ZERO reason to think that he won't be VASTLY improved over that season's performance in our current situation. He won't be asked to carry the load here, merely to contribute. How can anyone bash this guy...he is almost perfect for our current situation.

It's time to stop fantasizing about Ricky. I took a lot of heat last year for not welcoming him back, but this is exactly why I didn't want him. He is unstable...that's just the way it is. Let him go. Morris is going to be just fine.

i'm not even going to read this but sammy morris is a decent backup but he's no more than a 3rd down back. if ronnie went down we couldn't survive with only morris back there and minor is worthless except on ST. we need some type of potential insurance back there.

Well written. I agree with you completely.

I just love the fact that the doomsday posters have not taken into consideration one other point.....

Do you really think that Saban did not have a very good alternative plan in mind in case Ricky was suspended. No matter what he said in the press, there is no way that Saban was relying on Ricky this season. He indicated his support, but he already had a backup plan in case his BACKUP running back was not able to play.

And does everyone forget how Sammy Morris performed last year on his limited opportunities? That one TD run was SWEEEET! And look at the guy....he's got some guns almost as big as D-BO. He is a beast and will be a good complement to Ronnie when called upon.

I agree with the original post. No need for doom and gloom. We were definately spoiled by having two Pro Bowl RB's on our roster.

i rekon we should sign eddie george to a one year contract and have him help and back up ronnie play a few downs to give ronnie a rest hes gonna need he wont last the season otherwise, hes very capable and i rekon hes still got another season in him i saw him on nfl network last week i think it was and he looked pretty good he also said he would play given the chance

This is based on what.
If they were worthless than why are they on the team. Minor is the 3rd down change of pace back. Morris was a Fullback that can carry the rock a full game. Hes proved it.

I agree with the poster that Morris ran with a non-existant line. Dont condemn the team before they are given a chance.

anyone remember the number he got when he strted for us ??

I'm with you.The guys had his shot the first time Ricky was out and he was just okay

523 yards, 4.0 ypc, and 6 TDs in eight starts behind one of the worst offensive lines in recent NFL history is just okay?

it was just over 500yds, not bad for half a season

I disagree with this statement... I believe that even your boy Cadillac would not have been as succesful running behiind that line and in that same offense.

My point exactly, Sammy got 4.0 YPC behind the worst line in the NFL in 2004. That's 4.0 YPC - about what Ricky averaged last year. Don't forget Ronnie averaged 4.4 YPC last year.

Our line will get better with Houck and we will have an improved passing game. I'm not worried in the slightest. The only problem occurs if Ronnie goes down. I wouldn't say that Sammy is the perfect #1 back, but he would do a decent job for us. Let's face it, if any top-notch back in the league goes down, their team would suffer.

I hate losing Ricky....I thoroughly enjoyed watching him play, but it's over and we have to move on.

Who are the 2 pro bowl RB's on your roster? I only recall one of them ever being in the pro bowl.

I agree w/a lot of posters here in regards to the "doom & gloom" scenario. Your running game will just be fine without Wicky. Let's face it, after some of his quotes I read recently it seems like he could completely care less whether he ever plays again or not. Football is not even close to a priority in his life.

The only potential pitfall would be if Ronnie was injured. All teams have the possibility or getting the injury bug but Miami was in a great position w/potentially 2 high calibur RB's in case one got injured, the other could step in.

I think Sammy will be more than adequate.

Sammy Morris has a 1 year contract with the phins. He is not a good long-term back-up choice for Brown.

The issue is there are high quality RBs in this draft that present long term value to the phins that are potentially better then what we have for our current back ups.

If Saban agreed with the nonsense you are posting he would have signed Morris to extension a long time ago and for more then one year.

Your analogies to what he did with a 4-12 team dont mean jack squat.
