I don't know if I'm getting the wrong idea, but it feels like the members of this board are wholly unanimous in their support of our first 3 draft picks in rounds 1 and 2. I can't understand why this is, being that (before the draft) I thought many were in agreement with my sentiments that Vontae Davis was a very overrated workout warrior type, and Pat White would be an ill advised luxury pick anytime before the 3rd round.
I don't totally hate our picks being that we did fill serious needs in the secondary, and it isn't like we reached for Vontae, I just don't like him. However, my problem is and always has been that after the top 7 receivers in this draft who would no doubt all be gone by the time we picked at 44 (and they were) there was a HUGE drop off in talent from guys like Nicks and Robiskie to guys like Tate, Barden and Turner. At the same time, there were still very good secondary players available at #44 and #56. By the time we picked in the second round, our opportunity to bolster our recieving corps had passed us by and we were only able to help the secondary. I am a big Sean Smith fan BTW.
In my opinion, even though I would have also loved Maualuga at 25, we messed up big time on two counts. First of all, we screwed up huge by not aiding our largely talent-free receiver corps. Patrick Turner is big and has good hands, but he's very slow and he was not very productive in a great situation, and Hartline is a joke and I don't understand that pick. He would probably have been available in round 6.
Second of all, the selection of Pat White at #44 is not only a horrendous reach, but it was also a disregard of the laundry list of needs that litter our roster right now. As I said, it was an egregious error because it was a huge luxury pick for a team that cannot be making those kinds of selections. If you want to talk to me about his value as a "slash" type player, I can only become further infuriated because the kid not only has no desire whatsoever to return kicks or play receiver, but he hasn't attempted to do any of those things since high school. So please don't bother with that argument. The wildcat was cool at first and it served it's purpose but at the end of the day it was never halfway successful againt good defenses, and I have a hard time believing that the spread offense will work in the NFL.
Sean Smith was the only pick we made that I liked, however I would have rather us taken an inside linebacker or a pass rusher being that we already took Vontae Davis.
I would have much rather our first few draft picks looked like this:

1. Hakeem Nicks or Kenny Britt
2a. Connor Barwin or Clint Sintim
2b. Sean Smith (good job)
3. Jasper Brinkley or DJ Moore

I really wish that they would just let the "wildcat" die and focus on bringing in help for our quarterback of the future and our defense. The majority of my ill feeling regarding this draft comes from the Pat White pick, which to me was just awful. I wanted to vomit. We have serious needs and we don't need a trick player or a part time quarterback.
Not a good job in my opinion. Objectively, I'd give our draft a C-.

I think you should change the title to:

"Why The First Day of the Draft Was Terribly Disappointing to me"

Honestly, we all have our favorite picks and all, however were not in charge of the team and we don't know what the FO knows. Let the players play before you denounce this draft. We still have places were weak in and it will take multiple drafts to put us where we need to be.

Try not to be too disappointed,we never really know how this is gonna shake out until the games start-many players will surprise and disappoint us.Let's see how they play and judge then.

I personally thought (and so did a lot of experts) that Davis was the best TRUE corner in the draft.. and the FO just proved that by taking him..

you say Patrick turner is slow, yet hes the same speed, if not faster, than Nicks.

Getting two CBs was the right move for the future. Will Allen is older, we'll need another CB later.

And white, well, they love him. they have to. i have to believe that their love is for a reason.

we needed cornerbacks more than we needed wide recievers. my favorite pick of the draft was pat white. hes a winner and a game changer and dont be suprised when in 2010 they make it an open competition between chad henne and pat white at QB. they are going to give white a chance at QB.

If you actually evaluated both players (Nicks and Turner) by watching them both play and seeing the types of plays that they make and the kinds of players that they are, there's no way you could think that they are the same speed. Nicks is much more of a well rounded receiver with much more speed and explosiveness than Turner.
And I would not have had an issue with taking two corners, I just thought we should have draft a WR first because of the way the draft was going to play out. Did you not see that I suggested we take Sean Smith then possibly DJ Moore in the 3rd?

Then what the hell are we doing with Chad Henne? That argument is baseless! They drafted White to run this ridiculous wildcat when we have a ton of real needs.

Vontae: has even more potential to turn into a shutdown corner than Jenkins. Would you have turned down a shot at Asomugha too (incidentally drafted 31st by Old Al).

Smith: everyone agrees, incredible value for the pick, not even counting extracting the extra pick out of trading down

White: I'm kind of with you on this.. but if we're going to a spread formation, Henne's got the mobility of a tree trunk. If the FO doesn't agree that Henne's not quite the heir apparent this board has anointed him to be, and Beck is history, why not draft someone who can help us immediately as a game breaker who Mayock considers a legitimate starting QB, who's outshone both Sanchez and Stafford in the Combine, and has a more impressive collegiate body of work than either of them.

We don't know what's going on behind the scenes. Based on past recent history, I've gotta give the benefit of the doubt to the Trifecta who signed Bess and Carpenter as FAs, took Donald Thomas in the 6th not to mention drafting Jake, Langford and Merling, thanks.

Just a thought on my part. White and Turner are not only threats in the wildcat but the redzone and goal line. Think about it not only do you have to defend R&R but now you have to defend a 6'5 WR with great hands (Wilford did have the hands) and a QB who can throw and run just as well as any RB we have on the roster. ATL was a nightmare in the red zone with Vick. When he rolled out DBs and LB's couldn't just drop in coverage or they would get burned by vick. White give you this option in the red zone or on the goal line.

It's not the talent, it's the needs.

I'm no scout, i don't know how good Patrick Turner or Brian Hartline or Pat White are going to be at the NFL level. But i do know that our issues last year weren't at WR, or with the effectiveness of the Wild Cat. Our issues were in our front seven in rushing the passer, and in pass coverage as a result. Now i'm REALLY glad we completely made over our secondary this off-season, but i'm frankly not happy that we went so heavy on skill position players. Yes we need a number 1 WR, yes we could use depth a TE but i don't think those needs are as great as DL or OLB.

Great post and well said. I do not agree with all of your ideas but I do agree with the following;

1. Pat White was a ridiculous pick. Does not fill any need we had. Drafting a player just to run a gimmick formation is madness.
2. Rey Maualuga should have been taken with our second pick.
3. The "wildcat" needs to be forgotten about and we need to work on improving our regular running game.

I do however like the Davis and Smith picks. They are far and away the most sensible picks we made.

I give us a C rating overall.

The Bengals selected Mauluga before our pick came up...geniuses.

It would have been nice to maybe give up a 4th rounder and trade up a couple of spots to get Maualuga... But yeah, he was gone.

Either way, a trade up for Rey would have beaten the **** out of drafting Pat White.
