The players union will file a grievance. It'll get racist. It'll get religious. It'll get nasty. In effect it could draw a lot of the kind of attention the NFL doesn't want. Luckily they have excuses to let Ricky slide. It wasn't marijuana. Saban has put his reputation on the line vouching for Ricky's "conformity". Subsequently it's likely the public will accept the scenario that the dirty test was the product of some concoction in RW's spiritualistic revelry.
:goof:

p.s. His attorney's announcement that a decision against Ricky would undermine the NFL's drug policy doesn't hurt either. Sounded like a veiled threat to me.

I was thinking if they suspend Ricky they kind of make him a martyr and he could always deny what caused the positive on the test, and he also could use this and say he wanted to play for Miami to pay back his 8+ million dollar debt, but the NFL suspended Ontarrio "Whizzinator" Smith and nobody made a big deal about this. I just hope he won't get a year suspension.

I like your theory...I just hope it works out that way...I'll take anything right now.

you're saying you think Ricky did this on purpose in order to avoid playing football AND paying back the money? Hmm, ok what was Ricky's score on the Wonderlic? anyone?

I dont hear anything coming from the players union and we all know that Upshaw plays ball with Tagliabue. The thing I took from the lawyer is that they will sue, regardless of whether the players union backs him or not. You dont need a union behind you to make a case. All you need is the evidence and the will to take it to court and a lawyer to file it. So far, all those are in place. The reason I think the NFL is going to take as much time on this as they need is to figure out just what may happen. No one knows because all this is behind close doors. Which is what this whole Ricky charade was suppose to be in the first place. Now there is fifty stories a day on it when there is not suppose to be.

I think Ricky gets cleared if they determine that it was something Ricky ingested for health/religious purposes that triggers a positive for one of the many substances that are banned. I think Cromwell knows that this case is based on getting Ricky more than actually having something to take him down for other than past discretions. Quite frankly, I would love to see a court battle to make Paul Tags and his last stand a doozie. I would hate that Ricky would not be able to play but it is the driving force for a major settlement because he is losing his lifes blood/ lifestyle.

finfan54, The problem is there are many commonly-used, legal substances which can flunk their test. I think the burden of proof is on the NFL to show that Ricky took 'street amphetamines' (or however one would term it) . Otherwise, LAWSUIT, and he would win.

I'm sure the NFL would rather deal with rickys people than the congress like baseball. If the nfl looks as if it is ok to do drugs than it will be outside of there hands. I'm not saying something like this will happen, just that the case is bigger than ricky vs. a few people and the nfl has to play it by the book.

This case could show that the NFL's "book" is medically flawed and thereby a can of legal worms.

that could be the case, my point was the original poster thinks it will be due to the grievance case ricky will file. The NFL will look at the situation and do what it feels is the correct move, they wont have pressure on them to not suspend ricky, because of a greivance or other lawyers and people that would get involved, thats not a threat to the decision makers.

Damn dude, never thought about it like that. I have my doubts that the all powerful NFL may be afraid of some controversy but perhaps it is in their best interest to side-step it instead of finding out. Good stuff.

I still would likw the source of the leak in Denver revealed that violated the confidentiality rules. That seems to have been swept under the rug. That leak is what made this a media circus. JMO of course!

I think Ricky will win his appeal, he's into yoga and he's a vegetarain now. he wouldn't put some harmful drug into his body. the drug he tested positive for was probably a medical drug

Look stop sugar coating this situation, Ricky failed 3 DRUG tests, 3! not 2, not 1, but 3... Each player and there agents get a list of banned substances, at some time in the process and should not use them for any reason, there should be no reasons... Race, religion, gender, whatever! These things should not be a factor in this. Look I was not with out my partying as a young man, but come on pay me millions of $$$$, I'd quit smoking pot. There is plenty of time for that if you need too once you retire. Jobs have rules. The NFL is Rickys job, he messed up and should be fired! Ricky is a idiot. Plain and simple.
