The future of the organization rests in a young, franchise quarterback. And in order to achieve that, you have to draft a QB who is young, versatile, and with the right molding, the next Dan Marino.

There should be no question as to his plans for the offseason at this position.

Veteran free agent starts (Gus. Thats what he was brought in for)

Drafted rookie learns. (Cutler perhaps? If Saban has his way...)

If Gus gets hurt, we have a decent backup before the rookie gets killed. (Cleo Lemon, a decent backup)

We're only missing one of these three. And thats because the draft hasnt happened yet.

Saban knows exactly what he wants. He's said it a hundred times. We may not always agree with it, but its clear what he's trying to do. I hope it all works out. I have a feeling it will.

I think most people ask the questions to kill time. This part of the off season takes the longest. :(

Here's what's worrisome about your theory....

1) Gus has already proven to be mediocre at best. Tends to be inaccurate and inconsistent and does not usually give up the big play, unfortunately that is the big play [in the form of offensive scores as well as giving up the pick-6's].

2) While most of the draft experts have Cutler with the necessary skills to become a fine pro, he also is likely, almost definitely, to be gone by the time we pick, meaning that IF we are to go after him, it'll involve other draft picks and or players to make it happen...With the other holes that we have, can we afford to give up that much. If he settles for the next level, [Croyle, Jacobs] may not be available even with our 2nd rounder and much too high to give up a 1st for. Again, he can trade up, but at what cost. The next level [McNeal, Whitehurst, etc) are not at the level of talent at this point.

3) Lemon....where have you [or anyone] seen anything from him ?? Perhaps he'll do well enough to fill in, as you said, but we don't know this. He's never played except in a few quarters of mop-up time against guys that probably didn't make SD roster...Even Sage looked good in the preseason, but he couldn't do it in real time. Where is the confidence that he can do anything, even make the roster, much less fill in for an injured Gus....

So, IMO, Saban can't go into the season with Gus slated as the starter. We know how that pans out...it won't get us to the next level. Lemon is an unknown quantity and the hopes of getting the guy he wants in the draft is too much of a risk. He needs to get a FA or a young gun via trade before the draft so that whatever happens in the draft, we'll be in better shape for this coming season...

Questions about any part of the future of the Dolphins, including quarterback is simply being a fan and the typical fans interests and emotions. If a fan doesn't have curiosity and questions then he is a disinterested fan and that sure doesn't build a very good fan base for a good team. Of course as always that is JMO.:rolleyes2

The fact that Saban is talking with TO about playing for miami means there is no way Gus will be the starter for us. I am sure the talks between TO and Saban include who will be the QB next season. TO will not come to miami without us having a proven QB. I really think that Miami is spending all this money on coaches so that we can make a run at the SB next season. Gus did a fine job for us this season but not well enough to take us to a SB.

I'd like to add another interesting wrinkle to all of this........Jon Kitna is going to be a UFA too. Competition for Gus, while the rookie learns.

This is true. But it all comes down to options.

One thing Saban did say for sure is " This isnt fantasy football."

The Fins would love to get a QB better than Gus, but who was available at the time?

As for a FA this offseason, is there a guy out there that can come in and be signifcantly better than Gus? I dont think there is. Kitna, Warner, etc. These guys are all built in the same mold as Gus except they dont have any experience with this team and Gus does.

Saban will target a QB in the draft and go after him, and he might just do whatever it takes to get him. In the meantime, Gus will be the starter.

Thats not going to happen. The rookie will be Gus' competition.

You dont bring in another terd to compete with your current terd.
