Of course Chambers and McMichael are saying they don't want TO because he's a locker room cancer. But I think there are more subtle reasons they don't want him.
McMichael is emerging as a vocal leader on the offense, and Chambers is emerging as a true #1 receiver. TO would do two things: 1) immediately replace McMichael as the "voice" on offense and thereby disintegrate the offensive leadership structure that has been building over the past three years, and 2) immediately take over Chambers's position as the #1 receiver.
Coincidentally, I think both of these things happened when Cris Carter was signed. The offensive leadership structure was disintegrated, and Chambers started wondering just who was the go-to guy.
I think these guys believe they've paid their dues with mediocre QBs and shoddy and conservative offensive systems, and I think they're looking at next year as the time when they'll put it all together. I don't think they want to see TO get in the way of that.
And I think you play with fire by adding very vocal, talented, and outspoken players to a team that's on the verge of establishing true leaders of its own.
