Why did this team trade Landry if the value they got for him is less than what they could of gotten as a compensation pick next year? Why even give him the franchise tag in the first place? This trade makes little sense to me. I can understand that they could not afford him, but why did they trade him for less than what we could have gotten in next year's draft as return? This move seems like a complete panic move, which I completely don't understand.

We lose that comp pick if we do much of anything in FA this year. Now we have that pick guaranteed and can still use FA

we will be active in free agency and wouldn't have gotten a comp pick anyway most likely.

They were hoping to trade him. When other teams who were interested in Landry heard his price tag, they subsequently laughed at him and said thanks but no thanks. Cleveland was the only team that would take on the one year rental
To that point, it would've been interesting to see him hit free agency. It only takes one team to overpay, but it doesn't even look like the browns are going to commit to that long term or they would have before the trade was done. I don't think he'll ever see the 14.5+ million contract he was expecting.

First is the premise that a pick this year is worth more than a pick next year (about 1 round). You can put whatever weight you want into that idea, but that is the general consensus among NFL gurus.

Second, the team has been so badly mismanaged under the salary cap that they panicked and were forced to make moves they werent prepared to accommodate. Other teams called Miami's pathetic bluff and took advantage of them. Tbaum's testosterone prescription ran out and he bent over to accommodate the Browns.

That's the long and short of it.

brush up on the compensatory pick rules. then you'll understand.

They are somehow planning to be players in free agency this year. Which means more cuts, trades and restructuring of contracts to come. Since they will be signing players those contracts will offset what Landry would have received. Which most likely would have made the compensatory pick lower than a 3rd.

This has already been explained time and again. That comp pick so many people are taking for granted wasn't going to happen. Also, the fact is Gase didn't really want him. Last year he just wasn't listening to the coaches and Gase pretty much had it with him and Ajayi so they got two picks for a guy they didn't want. And that is the end of it. We should just hope for the best moving forward

Ozzy rules!!

It was pretty obvious some kind of trade would happen, considering that's trader Mike's biggest fetish. It wasn't great, but at least it's not pants-on-head retarded, which is always something you have to worry about when Tannenbum is calling the shots.

I'm no fan of Mr.T and don't take this as an excuse for him. But Gase has more to do with this than you think. Both Ajayi and Landry haven't bought into the Gase reign. They had to go. So the real question is if you believe in Gase.

I'm still on the fence on Gase as a head coach. But his talent evaluation is terrible and biased as hell. Good thing we have Tannenbum to find talent for him! :wall

I liked Landry's fiery approach to the game but, outside of a lot of catches, he wasn't that productive. He is not worth $16 mill a year (or more if he has his way in Cleveland). He doesn't score often, his YPC is paltry. I think Grant can take the position and be a bigger contributor than Landry was. Probably not in terms of total catches, but potentially in far more big plays and TDs. Just my opinion.

3rd round comp is essentially same as first pick of the 4th round. Plus it’s the first pick of the 3rd day so the war room can reorder their board.
