What I find interesting is that the other teams in line for Andrew Luck (Minnesota, Indy, Rams) all already have quarterbacks that they've either drafted for the future (Ponder, Bradford) or will have for many more years (Manning) Now one would think this is a good thing, that they wouldn't take Luck and instead opt for a position of need.

But the truth of the matter is, your draft position = power. If someone else is number 1, that pick becomes open to any team that will pay high enough for Andrew Luck. Which means our competition for him grows enormously. If we have the first pick, Boom. Luck is a done deal. But let's say Indy gets it, decides "Hey, we can trade our number 1 pick to the Redskins and get way more picks to address our crappy team" and we miss out.

If we don't end up the worst team out there, we may get in a bidding war for this kid. Now I'm not saying that's a good idea. There are good quarterback prospects out there, sure. But Luck is the closest thing to a sure bet when it comes to college players. We've gambled on too much to not go for the fastest horse in the race. And do you really wanna be sitting there watching Luck bring some other team to the super bowl year after year and think "Damn, we could have had him"?

The only question I have is this...

If the Colts and Miami both go O fer... how do they determine who gets the number one pick?

^^^^ You're horrendously ignorant of the draft if you think either of those guys were 'sure bets.' Russell was a HUGE reach, just one of many terrible first round draft picks Al Davis squandered on a workout warrior. Leaf had major character questions coming out of college. The guy was flat out known as a party animal with no work ethic who was a bit of a lunatic. You know nothing if you think those guys were even in the same class of prospect as Luck or even effing Barkley.

The team with the #1 pick will take him, unless it's Carolina. Cam Newton is a rookie who has shown enough that I think the Panthers would definitely want to trade down for more picks.

But seriously if you think the Colts won't take him? the owner already tweeted that they would.

I'm #1 on the Suck 4 Luck bandwagon, but the truth is that not having the #1 isn't the end of the world. There are some other good QB prospects in this draft, and most importantly HAVING A GOOD HEAD COACH will do wonders for this team. Rejoice, gentlemen, Sparano will not be back next season.

Ryan Leaf was a sure bet

Jamarcus Russell was a sure bet

Neither were sure bets.

Where the hell did you even get that JaMarcus Russell was a sure bet?

Most people knew he would bomb out.

Most scouts agree Andrew Luck is by far the best QB prospect to come out for quite some time.

That said, I highly doubt this team will get the top pick.

The players don't care about the dolphins getting Andrew Luck, as most of them don't even know if they will be on the team next year. Sparano knows if he coaches the team to dead worst in the league the pressure for him to get fired from media, fans will be too much and the front office will have no choice but to fire him.

No one has incentive to tank, and although this squad is horrible the odds of finishing dead last are not good. The dolphins won't beat the Rams, Colts, Cardinals, or Jaguars in terms of least strength of schedule, which is the draft tiebreaker. So essentially we'd need to finish with the dead last record in the NFL. A possibility, but certainly not likely.

This conversation is premature. Wait until the Dolphins hold the #1 draft pick, or are still in legit position to take it late in the season to speculate.

I disagree that Manning has "many" more good years left. He's no spring chicken

The Colts will take AND KEEP Andrew Luck in a heartbeat. Bill Polian and Irsay aren't stupid.

Let's play along....

We draft Andrew Luck. He flops.

Cut him. Draft another QB. It's that simple.

You can not and WILL NOT win in this league without an elite level QB.

With all of the rule changes benefiting offenses and protecting QBs, you have to have a big boy QB to win now.

There's no arguing this. So you draft Luck and see what happens. With the rookie salary cap in place now, teams won't be afraid to go big on the first pick anymore. You get to draft a franchise player and you don't have to pay him a ridiculous amount before he steps on the field.
