Why we absolutely HAVE to have the first pick

The same people saying "There is no such thing as a sure bet" were the same ones over the last few years saying "BUILD THROUGH THE DRAFT, DRAFT A NOSE TACKLE, ARGGGGGGH".

Explain to me, who should we pick then?What good does it do winning 3 or 4 games and not having a shot at maybe the best DRAFT prospect since Peyton Manning? Why wouldnt you want that?

I will never understand the thinking that people have when it comes to saying such asinine things as "there is no such thing as a sure bet." Whats the alternative? Keep doing what we have been doing for 15 flucking years and ignoring elite quarterback talent in the draft as we draft lineman after lineman? I seriously dont get it outside of just wanting to take an opposing opinion.
 
Just because teams took bad qb's in early round 1 doesn't mean there arent sure bet qb's. Russel was easily overreached. VY made some plays his senior year, but we all saw how horrible his throwing motion was, and it still hasn't changed. Lienart was on possibly the best college football team ever. Ryan leaf had tons of redflags long before the draft. Andrew luck is nothing like these guys. He doesnt have ANY big named receivers. He has 2 picks (both of which were tippped by his own players) and he's extremely athletic. He's in a different ballpark from these other guys.
 
By the way, all the "we have too many needs, build the defense, we need an offensive line before a qb or else he will be worthless, 1st round qbs are bust too much" that I have heard in Dolphin land for the last 10 years has gotten us this. Right where we are now. GREAT JOB! Bunch of Sparanos we have in our fan base.

Look at what your line of thinking has gotten us. Keep ignoring the QB position as your archaic suggestions keep being proven to be seasons of failure after failure as we continue to ignore the most important position in all of sports.

I think it's actually strength of schedule and... the Colts would 'win' on that.

There's a very real chance we will be awful but not awful enough to pick #1. I think the worst part of all that will be the fan reaction.

As stated above, if multiple teams have the same record, the team that played the weakest schedule wins the tie-breaker.

In other words, whoever went 0-16 (or whatever) with the easiest schedule gets the higher draft position.

:lol2: are you kidding me?! No he wasn't. There were so many question marks regarding Young. His low wonderlic score threw up red flags all over the place. Could he handle a full NFL playbook? etc etc.


Luck is the best QB prospect probably since Peyton Manning and I sure as hell hope we get him!
 
while VY and jamarcus russell and leinart definitely had question marks and were not sure bets, the peeps in this thread saying ryan leaf wasn't in the class of prospect as luck are absolutely wrong. that's simply revisionist history. when manning got drafted, scouts, draftniks, and everyone else were pretty much 50/50 on them; there were a LOT of people who preferred leaf cuz of his physical tools. his character concerns were considered a minor issue and it wasn't till later that the full extent of em came out. basically, the three most highly regarded QB prospects of the last 30 years until luck have been elway, manning, and leaf.

then again, IIRC, elway was clearly above manning and leaf as prospects, and i think luck is closer to elway as a prospect than those other two.

so i don't think luck's gonna go the way of leaf, of course. i just think it's easy to forget how great of a prospect leaf was at the time.

They wont all pan out. There is no doubt about that.

Luck seems to have no question marks. People preach around here building through the draft and honestly, picking this kid just drives that home more than it ever has. Offensive lineman bust too, but we still draft them.

But we have to take a shot and if you are ever going to draft one in the first round, this is the year to be in the spot to get him. Cause if he ends up being what he is projected to be, you have another Marino situation on your hands where you are a contender for 12-15 years year in and year out.
 
Luck is in a class all by himself, maybe you could include Elway there with him as far as draft class prospects but nobody else including Marino was a sure bet coming out. Luck is just off the charts but if Miami does not fix its staff issues they will ruin him if he lands here. Our problem starts at the top. We need to chop the head off the snake and grom a new one. The sad reality is that we still have a bad front office and nothing will improve until that gets fixed.

Even Peyton Manning wasn't a consensus "franchise" QB. Andrew Luck is the first TRUE franchise QB since John Elway.

Ryan leaf, iirc, weighed in a 265 before the draft. 20 lbs over his playing weight. There were a ton of red flags with that guy regarding his work ethic. Leaf was much closer to russel than manning. People just became enamoured with a guy that big with his arm.
 
I can see there are the same people who are scared to draft a franchise QB in the first round.

You must like mediocre football?
 
If i were Manning i would be extremley pissed if they took Luck. You have the chance to fleece some team for a ton of picks and you pick a QB you have alot of holes to fill and you just say "screw it we really dont need to fix anything" id be pissed that you are not trying to get better.

But this could all be for naught if Luck goes back to school, id be leary of the ones that go back to school. We just need a fresh start but i hope this is the last time we have to visit this QB issue, but i feel like with our luck we probably will not fix it.

Also id like to see Luck against some diffiuclt defenses instead of the cupcake ones he plays against every week im hoping that one of the top teams falls down to the 4-5 range and goes head to head with Stanford this year.
