To me we don't need Chris Long either. If we drafted him it would be under the assumption that he can play the 3/4 OLB spot and to guarantee a "project" and thats what he would be, because he hasn't played OLB that much, 35 million dollars is wild. Chris is an high energy player like Roth is and can't be counted on as anything more. Notice no one in the draft is touting him as a pass rusher or run stopper, its always he has high energy, last time I checked high energy doesn't get to the QB, and doesn't stop the run (example Matt Roth). His own coach (Al Groh) said he would get worn down if he played end in the 3/4 in the NFL. He has an average first step, and an organization can't commit 35 mill to I guy that will probably never be a consistent 10+ sack guy. And if he can't be an OLB, 35 million dollars is NOT the going rate for a 3/4 DE, that is so many times over the going rate, we'd be the laughing stock of the league. Bump the good feelings you get about the guy and start thinking critically, his pedigree doesn't guarantee us anything. I like Jake Long or Gholston and theirs two reasons to take him. We can either win with him or be beat by him for the next 10 years (the Jets will take him at 6, in a heartbeat) and he is commonly regarded as one of the best pass rushers in the draft (ie the pass rush was the reason the Giants won, thats for those of you who use that argument to justify Chris Long as the choice) with his skill set you can always find a place for him on your team, 3/4 OLB or pass rush specialist.
