Before you immediately "dislike" my post because Su'a-Filo is a lineman, hear me out -
I think the reason why most people were pissed off about the pick last night was because, though James is a solid football player who is going to help the team this year, we got no value with that pick. We had the 19th overall pick, and we ended up getting (at best) the 5th best tackle in the draft. Its simply bad value. We could have gotten the #1 ranked safety in the draft, which would obviously have been great value at that spot. But at the end of the day, James was the pick, and though it wasn't good value, it is what it is. At worst, he will be a solid starting RT for us. Time to move on.
So now we have two glaring needs - G and MLB (because they want to move Ellerbee outside, apparently). Still on the board is Xavier Su'a-Filo, unanimously considered the best guard in this draft. Here is Walter Football's scouting report on him: http://walterfootball.com/scoutingreport2014xsuafilo.php. Obviously I want a playmaker. But guys - Can we just PLEASE once and for all finish building this goddamn line!? How many years have we mixed and matched players? Enough is enough. Trade a 5th round pick to move up, or swap picks in an earlier round, and get the freakin best player at our biggest need. THAT is value. Our o-line will be done, and we can spend the next 3-4 years focusing on drafting playmakers. I just want this lineman crap to be over with, and we might as well end it with the best player at the position.
In round three, if Borland is there, obviously we should grab him in a second. He is basically Zach Thomas reincarnate. Christian Jones may also be there because he failed a drug test. If we can get Su'a-Filo and Borland in the next two rounds, our first 3 picks will all be immediate starters and will make huge contributions to the team this year. I know people want Lee or maybe a TE in round 2, but I really think Su'a-Filo provides the most value there, even if he is a lineman. Our line would finally be complete, which is exactly what we need.
