Serious Analysis of #1

If we werent fans of the Dolphins and we really looked at what is currently on our rosters and add in the 2nd round investment on Beck just 1 yr ago I think its obvious we would all agree we need Jake Long!

Lets look at The possibilities at #1 and the people currently playing there postion:

1. Chris Long
-Hes primarily a De. But is versattile enough to play olb every now and again.

Current DE's:

  • Vonnie Holliday: all-pro who played at a probowl level 2 years ago. Still has 2-3 solid years left
  • Matt roth: still yet to reach potential, Former 2nd round pick(3yrs pro), Has a lot of what is loved about Chris High motor physical good size, Potential Bust
  • Rob Ninkovich: Carrer Back, Showed some flashes of strong play could provide depth
  • Randy Starks: Young and hasnt reached potential, Versatle can play both de or dt, Can be a force when healthy, possible star, enormous talent
  • Rodrique Wright: Late round steal, young with possible good upside, played well in extended action last season, was a monster in college.
Current OLB's:

  • Jason Taylor : perrenial pro Bowler( Can list at De as well but we will run 3-4 this year and is a olb there) Defensive MVP of the league in 2006, Team leader and Captain, Future Hall of Famer.
  • Joey Porter : Former face of the steelers d when they were one of best in league, Pro bowl caliber OLB , Sack Master but could hav lost a step. Played better in 2nd half of season, Could either explode or continue to get old in upcoming season
  • Reggie Torbor : Still young,Can play inside and out in a 3-4, Helped fuel the Giants super bowl run with tremendos play in last 8 games of season, Great depth guy, Good Pass rusher,Possible ilb starter.
2. Matt Ryan:
-Qb University of B.C.

Current QB's:

  • John Beck: 2nd round Pick, Said to be very smart Quaterback coming out of college, played relativly bad producing no touchdowns in any game he started last season(4). Has a very strong arm, and a quick release. Played for a low talent team without #1 wr(Chambers), #1 Rb(Brown), and a depleted o-line that wasnt that great at pass protection to begin with. Lots of analysts were sold on him last year. Cam cameron Thought he was best quarterback in class.
  • Josh McCown: Bounced around in the league and still relativly young. HAs starting experience. Believed to be able tobe a good quarterback if he had a good o-line( Miami seems to give him the best chance at that yet) Strong arm, Pretty accurate and gets rattled easy.
  • Matt Baker: Familiar With Parcells. Scout team Training camp Guy.
3. Jake Long:
OT University of Michigan

Current OT's:

  • Vernon Carey: Pro Bowl Caliber Rt, Started last season as our left tackle and played pretty good. Is a good lt with great strength and good foot work, slow learner. Young and still dont know his ceiling.
  • Julius Wilson: Project guy, played bad in limited paly last season, still needs experience and coaching, has the size, speed and strength to maybe one day be successful, just too raw.
We only have 3 o-lin starters currently under contract

  1. Vernon Carey
  2. Justin Smiley
  3. Samson Satale
If the season starts to day the o-line looks like this (IMO):

LT-Carey LG-Mormino C-Satale RG- Smiley RT- Wilson

Reserves:Trey Darilek and Ikechuku Ndukwe

I dont care if your tom brady thats bad news!!! Lol

IT just seems that OT is the biggest need and allows us to be more free later in the draft let me further explain:

When I really break it down bottom line is we need like 4 more quality o-linemen including a starter at a Tackle position and a starter at guard. So that means to me at the very least we need to spend 2 draft picks on o-line(probably 3 but for sake of argument we get 2 fa) With the need for two starters what happens if we dont draft J. Long?

If We pick the guy up all we have to do is find a starter caliber guard somewhere else in the draftwhich except for Albert all have middle round grades in this draft, so we can still grab one of the drafts best with a 3rd or 4th round pick and be able to add some intriging talent with those 2 seconds(Qb, OLB, IlB, Or Wr,)

If we take Jake first we are actually getting someone who is agruably the best on the board and in a position of need. Where as if we draft Say, Matt Ryan then we need to grab a tackle at 32 and most likly we'll be reaching. The 32nd spot is a very good place to draft BPA. there will be some GOOD!! talent left there like possibly Dan conner LB penn State, Brian Brohm QB Louisville, Mike Jenkins CB South Florida, Kenny Phillips S Miami, James Hardy WR Indiana, or LB/DE Quentien Groves Auburn. but if we still havent addressed The tackle position @ 32 then then we will be forced to pass on these and select a tackle regardless if its someone with a low 2nd round grade like Anthony Collins compared to a potential 1st round grade(above) who fell to us.

Wouldnt we all love to get two studs? I know that many are going to say "yes but its just speculation that someone will fall to us " but that is what our front office has to be doing... speculating cause theres no way anyone can guarentee you anything in the darft

when you have an oppurtunity to fill a void on your team(we currently are looking at starting tackles of Carey and wilson :0 ) with the best player at his position and possibly in the draft avaible you take it.

Thoughts?

Very well written and punctual piece, with solid points, i honestly don't think we can go wrong drafting either Long.

Good post, I'm still in favor of Chris Long but I will be pleased with either Long come draft day. I'm not overly impressed with our DE or OLB crew, and if we draft Chris Long at the very least he should be able to gain some valuable tutelage under JT, assuming he isn't traded.

What if the Dolphins pick Jake Long in the first then another tackle in the second round? They could then move Vernon Carey backto guard which he played in college. That would then make the O-line a strength of the team.

Neither am I. To me its just that Chris and Jake are both so close and we need so much more on the o-line.

I cant say one bad thing about chris its just how i see the situation.

Bill believes in building through the trenches and imo he wouldnt have looked over many of the tackles in free agency had he not fallen in love with someone in the draft.

Again..why would we move a vet and a potential star from tackle to guard instead of just drafting a guard? It makes no sense to put him in a 3rd new position in the NFL and stick a rookie in his spot when we know he is a very good tackle with the potential to be a probowler.

Definatly agree with you. Moving Carey to Rt is alright but Definatly not to guard. The guy is a star at RT. If we do draft a LT then we can move him to right side but no way he moves inside.

It depends on what is available. If somehow, some way, Branden Albert drops to 32, then it would certainly make sense to draft him over a tackle and leave Carey at RT.

However there are a lot of good tackle prospects in this draft. So it would also make sense to grab a few of them (if Albert is gone) and then move Carey to guard so that we can make room for one of those tackles.

I highly doubt Carey's performance would slip in the least if he were at guard over RT. He may even be better suited to play guard.

This is a very good post.

Well organized and easy on the eyes too

I was originally in favor of taking Chris Long but the more I think about it, the more I would prefer beefing up the o-line to allow us to utilize our young talent on offense (Ronnie, Beck, Ginn).

On the real tip, I just think NOT drafting Jake Long #1 FORCES us to go OL in round 2 with the first pick . . . the elite crop of the first and second tier of OL . . specifically OT may be gone by our 2nd 2nd round pick. However if we draft Jake Long FIRST, we have options . . . we can go BPA . . . whether thats Cason at CB, Albert at G, Conner at LB, Groves at OLB/DE, or Hardy/Sweed at WR . . . I mean I like having those options . . . Jake is gonna be a beast in the NFL, lets grab him and address this OLine . . . that is the best option IMO.

That's a very good point and I agree completely.

I'm a big Chris Long fan and I still think Jake Long is the logical pick. Build an O-Line and give them a year or two to jell. But if we decide to draft Chris Long, I think we need to many things to force a LT pick at 32. I think at 32 you pick the best player available because there's still instant starters and potential pro-bowlers there, so draft BPA, not need. We have lots of needs, and next draft we'll be picking high again, and still need a lot of those positions, so take the best player at 32.

I think the CB pool in this draft is soo good and so deep that probably at 57 we've got a good chance to take a starting quality CB, so while I still say BPA at 57, I think that is going to be a CB. Then draft at least one more CB later in the draft. In rounds 3 and 4 we'll have chances to add solid G's and backup tackles, which we need.

Taking my limited draft analysis into account, I still worry that Chris Long could be average at the NFL level. I don't think we go Matt Ryan or Glenn Dorsey. It would be nice if we had the luxury of taking McFadden but I don't see that happening. I like Vernon Gholston. Always a need for a true impact defensive player. I'll be watching the Gholston vs Long comparison for a few years even if we don't pick one of them.

Then there's Jake Long. Obvious need position, the guy is big, tough and smart. Could have a huge impact on our offense. It's a tough call. Right now I have it Jake Long, Vernon Gholston, Chris Long.
