Please don't get me wrong because I would love to have Rodrigue Wright for a ten year career but why would he sign a contract with us? If I'm him and know my year is shot, why not get the surgery, do rehab at college as a graduate assistant or something, and go back into next year's draft as a possible first day pick? Can getting this year's rookie money come anywhere near close enough to making up the differance?

No, who guarantees that he will come back?, if he get into surgery and dont come back after it, no team will pick him even as an UDFA...

he doesn't have the option. we DRAFTED him.

Check the rules, if a draftee doesn't sign by the next year's draft he goes back into the pot. Happened to us years ago with a fullback by the name of Melvin Bratton. He was considered a first day choice, blew out his knee, we drafted him late, and he held out until the next year. Was drafted by Denver and went on to have a mediocore career.

Of course the most famous instince of this was Bo Jackson who was drafted by Tampa Bay and didn't sign until he got drafted the following year.

Why doesnt Ricky Williams just become a coach at Hofstra like Fielder, then come back into next season's draft. He could be a first round pick.

I think if money was an issue with Rodrique he would have entered the draft after his junior year when he was a sure fire 1rd pick. There is also no gurarantee that he'll be a first day pick next year because he would have been out of football for a year. He would also take the risk of getting drafted by a team like Detroit instead of a team like Miami. :D

They go back into the pot....its what Elway wanted, and what Eli said he was going to do as well without trades.

Beyond your sarcasm because he is under contract.

I believe you can re-enter the draft if you're unsigned. I think John Elway threatened to do to force a trade to Denver.

However coming off surgery and not playing football for a year it would be a big risk and he would likely be picked somewhere around the 5th at best and therefore unlikley to make a year's salary back.

Eli Manning threatened to go back into the draft. Being drafted doesn't mean much you can go back into next years draft.

That is correct.

The reason Wright needs to sign is that coming off surgery and having the rep that he did, he probably wouldn't go higher next year. By signing, at least he has team medical coverage and a professional place to rehabilitate.
