Zach is still worth $6 million per year. He would have still been our best linebacker. So why did he need to go?

Because we had 3 top-notch inside-linebackers: Zach, Crowder, Porter.

Porter is impossible to cut, because of salary cap reasons. So the choice was trade Crowder or cut Zach.

Zach is 10-years older than Crowder. I think Zach has 5-years of ability left in him, if he chooses not to retire. Zach is still better than the Seau we got 5 years ago. Zach and Seau are the two most prolific tacklers in NFL history.

Watch Zach reunite with Seau in New England, and go to another pro-bowl.

Back on point. I think Porter becomes the Middle Linebacker, with Crowder #2. Crowder is in a contract-year, and I look for him to step up this year.

Spragan's situation is unclear. He is a good backup outside linebacker, but not a starter. Pope is a good backup inside linebacker, as is Kelvin Smith.

It is unclear who are "Big outside linebacker" will be to cover the run... or who our fast outside linebacker to cover the pass, will turn out to be.

Does anybody know the dead-cap number on Zach by cutting him? I bet we didn't save that much money.

Sorry I disagree....Zach doesn't have 5 years left....he has one hit left. Thats why he was waived....and why he should retire.

I cant imagine that Joey Porter will ever be a middle linebacker. In 3-4 defenses he always rushed the passer.

Ya, Joey Porter is an outside linebacker, not inside.

You can still blitz from the Middle Linebacker position. Joey Porter has the same weight and build as Zach. He is definitely moving inside this year... the question is will be be a #1 or a #2.

Last year, JP was totally mis-used at outside linebacker, where we used that position to cover the pass. And when he did blitz, he ran into big linemen and had zero success.

"Ya, Joey Porter is an outside linebacker, not inside."
-- Nonsense. He's never been an outside linebacker except for last year, and he stunk at it. Time to move him back inside, like he's played his whole career. This is why the trade for him was soooo bad last year... we decided: "let's pay some guy to be the highest paid player on the team... even though he's our #3 linebacker... and let's have him play a different position than he's used to... one that he's not capable of playing". It's like paying Marty Booker $10 million per year, and having him play Quarterback.

Porter will be a new player this year, when he moves back to his natural position... either a #1 or a #2 linebacker.

Hey, even Joe Montana was let go by the 49ers.....that's what happens due to salary ramifications. Not many guys can play their whole careers with one team. Zach will always be in my top three Phin's players, but we have to build for the future.

i agree. joey porter is a pass rusher and loves to do it. he thrives as an OLB in the 3-4 in pittsburgh. no way he is MLB.

can we please show SOME respect for this guy........his name is ZACH not ZACK....

and joey porter is not a MLB....never will be.....just because he is same size doesnt mean he knows the position

Not sure if you have ever watched Porter when he was on the Steelers but he wasnt an inside linebacker. He was a OLB on a 3-4 defense. I cannot see the phins moving him inside.

I know man, try telling that to Rich though
