Wide 9 explained - very useful !

I was pretty sure it was a porno term. Hint we're pretty good at taking it.

First and foremost, please remove that POS link to a video game. That was straight up embarrassing clicking on that crap. :bobdole:

Next, The buzzword "wide 9" is nothing new. It was around many decades before Schwartz utilized it and it became some trendy slang that is for some reason being thrown around now.

The 9 technique is no more complicated than the other 8 techniques used along the line and is simply an alignment outside the TE. And it's original use was definitely not to defend the run (that's it's weakness) and was nothing more than allowing a defender to pin his ears back and rush the passer.

The only use vs the run that was ever effective was what this clinic covers which was against the Colts' stretch runs. Even then, when Schwartz was the Titans DC they still only garnered a 2-9 record vs Indy after it's installment while allowing 25 pt/g to them.

Can't we switch from a wide 9 to one of the other techniques as the game warrants or is it one of those things that once you commit to it you are committed to it for the season? Gase has said, that our defense was designed to play with the lead. Since we rarely have the lead, and teams are gashing us with the run, why can't we just move the DE's in? Other teams move their guys around at will, why can't we. (I mean this conceptually. Not talking about our D's talent or smarts.)

God status. /thread

Its supposed to allow the defender to pin his ears back but in the Patriots game I saw them leave Mario Williams completely unblocked and Garappolo have time to throw it 10 yards downfield before Mario even sniffed him from his wide 9 technique. Now, I don't know if this was an example of Belichick doing his homework and realizing its impossible to get to the QB from that position or if it was a blown assignment, and/or if Mario was not going full out or maybe he was thrown off by the fact that nobody blocked him and hesitated, but if it was Belichick and his counter to the wide 9 is why even waste a blocker on him, he'll never get to the QB from there then that is ridiculous.

Wide 9 was never designed to stop the run. It was always to enhance the pass rush. The alignment sucks and I said it as soon as they announced they were going to employ a wide 9 alignment that I didn't like it cause it makes you susceptible to getting run on. Eagles ran it last year with Jim Washburn and got run on at will. They were 32nd against the run last year. They have virtually the same personnel this year and they're 2nd in the league against the run.

I guess on paper the wide 9 sounds good in theory but in practice it's a colossal failure.

Schwartz is correct. Not a surprise. The wide 9 is very good at setting the edge if played correctly. Jones is killing us because he is squeezing too much, and he is not aware of the TE sealing him. It appears to be a poor execution or missed assignment method. I suppose VJ could be teaching squeeze the tackle. If so, then that is why we are getting killed by the ends not setting the edge.

Well we give up the edge...and the middle. So setting the edge would only expose the Dolphins weak defense up the middle.

Like I said...it all sounds good in theory but in practice it doesn't work. With the DE set outside there is a natural running lane between the tackle and guard.

Same with their offense...

Philbin wanted a team that throws short passes on offense and rushes the passer on defense. Unfortunately, this also meant that they couldn't run or stop the run. Consistently good teams can run and stop the run, which explains why Miami has sucked under Philbin, and why they still suck now using Philbin's players and a similar offense and defense. Want to fix it? Change the players, change the coaches, and change the schemes.

You mean in-game adjustments? I fear this coaching staff isn't capable of doing that.

When I reviewed the Titans game and reviewed other games. The nine gap is killing us. Playing the assignments correctly would significantly reduce the rushing yardage allowed. My message to Jason Jones would be do your job execute your assignment. He is the worst offender. His play is dumb to the extreme because he his giving up the edge and his path to the QB. Hello ... Jason. ... this is why we play the wide 9. Stop @&&:();@/$ up!

I admit that playing this correctly does put more pressure on the DT, and Philips is not performing well. It does require the correct fit from the linebackers, but they have been doing an acceptable job. Not great, but acceptable. Jason Jones failed badly during Titans game.

Belichick deployed a 9 tech vs certain teams and especially the Colts back then when we were all in the same division. At the 2:25 mark of Schwartz's clinic you'll hear him give credit to the Patriots D and to where he got the idea from. Belichick just doesn't do his homework - he's the teacher, the professor, the Jedi master.

You can absolutely switch in and out of it as per down and bring in the DE's. Just as you'll see us at times shift the fronts from Over to Under (in basic Suh goes from 3 tech to 1, and Phillips from 1 to the 3). It's just an alignment, it's not a specific defense.
