The NFL Network earlier today released their top 10 list of innovations that changed the game and making the list at #10 was the Dolphins' Wildcat formation. Other innovations included the 3-4 defense and the no huddle offense.

They classified an innovation as something that changes the way the game is played and helps define a team. The one guy said in the beginning of the show that if you want to win a championship and put your stamp on the game, you have to introduce something that defines who you are. Another guy said an innovation is something new that the league just wouldn't be the same anymore without it.

They ran a little special showing a lot of clips of the wildcat from last season. Described how the formation worked and how David Lee is the mastermind who brought it over from Arkansas. They talked about how it was a reinvention of the old single wing formation. They also showed clips of a few teams from last year(including the Falcons and Browns) running the formation as copycats.

They talked about how they totally owned the Patriots in Week 3. Greg Cote was on and said how it was so fun to watch Belichick on the sideline melting away like the Wicked Witch.

This can't be right...Pete Prisco hates the Wildcat! LOL!
Yeah, and Prisco's biggest reason for hating it is that it is not how the game is supposed to play. Basically, Prisco is like the kid getting beaten in a backyard football game and yelling "That's not fair, you're cheating!".

It would be like going into a ship battle and one group has a 1600 wooden pirate ship and the other has a US Battleship. The 1600 wooden pirate ship captain says "Hey 400 years ago this is how we fought, battleships with missiles? This is not how it is supposed to be!"

Why should teams stick to doing what everyone else does? Why not reinvent the game and find new ways of winning?

The whole reason they brought the list up was because of the wildcat, and ancient college style formations making a come back.
Finally Lee gets a mention. Parcells wanted him here, with the Wildcat in mind.... but Lee probably introduced it to Henning and is working in the lab with him.

IMO this could be Pandora's box they've opened up.

Every team in the league will have their own unique packages you watch.
Could be Pretty Exciting if your a football junkie like I am. We'll see how it develops soon !

I definitely feel the same way about the Wildcat and it's good to know that one of my favorite posters on this board has the same sentiments about it. I really can't believe the number of naysaying pessimists and traditionalists on this board campaigning against it's use. Don't get me wrong. I don't want it to be our base formation, but it should be good for 10-15 plays per game.

I know there have been plenty of posts discussing this formation and the potential types of plays that we can run out of it. There are just so many possibilties when there are more passing threats at the skill positions. I really hope this year sees us making history.

I want to leave with one scenario I don't think I've heard anyone talk about yet. Would it be possible/legal for Ronnie to motion Chad from WR to under center out of the Wildcat? That be a great wrinkle to throw in there to create mismatches, IMO. The opposing defense would be really trying to set up to stop the Wildcat, getting them out of position for a more traditional formation. What do you guys think?

Thank you, I've said this time and time again and guys keep saying im an idiot for calling it one of the biggest additions to the game since it started. The Miami Dolphins have put a stamp on this one and we have just seen the beginning of it. Feels kind of funny that after these past 5 or so seasons people the NFL is copying us.

As much as I hate the Wildcat........

I was re-watching the Jets 2nd Game the other night. Even Boomer was saying..."Notice how the Dolphins Wildcat is much faster than the Jets Wildcat"....Lulz...

We really should've blown them out.

People said this about the Run and Shoot......I mean...There's really no way to stop it. All the options, and, the running game just comes like a thunderbolt out of nowhere.

that is one of the keys i believe, the fact that unlike the run and shoot the wildcat is obviously run oriented and isn't something we need to put on the shelf when we visit the northeast late in the season.

The more weapons you have the better. If the crybabys dont like it, tuff shizzle. We have the right to do what ever we want . We have all kinds of wrinkles. They are all just mad because they are not the OG'S. We are ready this year to prove to the leauge that this offense is gonna trick you, smash you and flat out beat you. This Dolphins team and staff is no joke anymore. We are on our way to Valhala.

GO DOLPHINS.................#1

to me the biggest advantage is it forces defenses to react to us not the other way around. Letting us dictate the game can only be to our advantage.

Presnap motion out of the Wildcat?

Guys, no one answered my earlier question. Does anyone know if it is possible/legal for Ronnie to motion Pennington or White from a WR position to being under center to receive the hike? In this scenario, I'm assuming Ronnie would have to be the one calling the snap, since he is essentially the shotgun QB.

Think about all of the shifting defenses would have to do. Power running out of the Wildcat, versatility of dink/dunk/power running standard formation with CP10 under center, AND the deep Ginn bomb/option QB run threat that White will bring from under center.

Not to mention, all of the more gimmicky stuff out of the Wildcat would probably be used less frequently providing more of a surprise and, therefore, more success. All the reverses, reverse passes (Ricky in motion hands off to Ginn who throws to Cobbs/Fasano), motion passes (White plays the role of Ricky, but comes from the right since he is a lefty), motion flea flicker (think Texans game), and QB option pass (think Ronnie to Fasano in the Pats game). The possibilities are ENDLESS!!!!!!!!

I dont think you can motion someone to go under center. I'm not 100% sure but i think you need someone behind center when you break the hudle and you cant motion someone there because they're will already be someone there(if the guy there moves its an illegal shift). An option could be to shift before the offense is set but i dont know if you can shift the qb in that situation it may be once you are lined up under center you cant shift out of that spot, but again not 100%.
