I know it was only one game, but do you all think Ernest Wilford solidified his chances of making the team as a TE or do you think the coaches are still on the fence? I realize he had a nice game against Jax, but his inability to do ANYTHING last year worries me a little bit. If he does make it will the Fins keep Fasano/Martin/Wilford? Are Haynos and Nalbone out?

He did only have 1 catch....and it was on a blown coverage (love the play design). Broken tackle was nice...but it hardly earned him a roster spot.

He's not a lock to make the team, but scoring touchsowns couldn't hurt. If he makes the team, it will be as a tight-end and red-zone threat- just like what the coaches wanted out of him in the firtst place. That and his salary cap numbers are still preventative of his release. He must suck tremendously before we eat his salary.

Only if he proves he can block as a tight end. Otherwise, he's cut.

No, sorry...Wilford still sucks. He probably did cost the defender on the other team his job though...

I think they would rather save room for Chris Williams. I know... different position, but he will contribute every game... and in the end.... that's what we need.

On first glance I say no. It was more the play design than anything he did to score the TD.

Nalbone had a great game, and Haynos has been pretty quiet all camp. If Nalbone was really sucking it up then Ernest may have given himself a chance. But Nalbone's doing alright and that makes Ernest the odd man out. Then again, we will again be facing a cap hit by releasing him...if you're Jeff Ireland you kind of have to look at the cap hit for releasing Ernest as the extra amount you're paying for the guy you're keeping instead...and whether that guy is worth that much extra over Ernest. Looking at it that way, it does give Ernest an edge, doesn't it? You could probably stash Nalbone on the practice squad.

Dont we have enough players with small contracts to make up for the $$$$ while freeing up a spot if we let Wilford go?

I mean, take C Williams for example. We cut Wilford to make a spot for him, but we dont pay him next to anything. So who cares if we take the $$$ hit?

You know, I think Wilford will likely make the team because of his contract. However, I think he might have a role in some of our spread offense situations with Pat White at QB, my alma mater University of Arizona has run the spread offense the past couple seasons (and i've attended every home game, so i've seen it up close and personal), and there is a position called the small tight end (which is usually just a big physical WR), and this player usually lines up on the line (opposite of the true tight end), but split out into the slot and it creates a lot of mismatches because teams will often spread out to counter the spread with more pass coverage, but it can lead to size mismatches against corners and safeties across the middle making it a great look on 3rd and mediums. It also allows for solid crack back blocks onto the line backers for outside runs because you're getting a bigger body on them. I think this style position is tailor-made for Wilford, and will keep him on the field in at least SOME situations as opposed to paying the guy to ride the pine.
