a backup LB and special teamer? I like the way he plays and seems to always be around the ball. He is quick and tackles well but never seems to get chance because of Thomas being so good. Is Pope just solid LB depth for the Dolphins or will he become a starter some day?:sidelol:

Career back is my guess. Whereever he plays.

He actually has a good chance of being a starting WLB (4-3)/None playcalling ILB (3-4) in the future when Zach retires.

Depth. He filled in nicely when Zach was hurt. But we probably will never see him and Zach on the field at the same time because he really doesnt fit the type of linebackers the Dolphins scheme uses. Last year I thought they should've try and trade him for a pick because he played some and may have had some value. But he did not get on the field much last season so that value maybee gone. But he could excell for another team if given the chance.

Is somebody tickling you or did you eat the wrong mushrooms?

I think that he may be a career backup, although he is good enough to start in this league IMO from his performance in his rookie year in 2004 and in 2005... If Zach were to retire and we did not draft an ILB or pick one up in FA, then he may get his deserved shot... He is still only 24, Y. Bell didnt get his chance in the starting lineup until he was 27.. give it time and he just may get his shot..

I agree, I think he could start @ LB for us if Zach were to retire (Channing moves to his spot) next year (Obviously we would address the LB position either this draft or the next one on the first day, so that would be the competition). I don't think he will ever be a teams long term answer as a starting LB, but he is a solid backup and can fill in for an injured starter.

I dont think he will start, when Zach hangs his hat we will then draft a Patrick Willis or someone dominant like that to take the reigns. Or channing will move over, which is also very likely. I am a fan of Pope, but I don't think he is a long term answer. great depth player.

He needs to pack on a couple pounds to have a chance when Zach retires.

I really like Derrick Pope. He doesn't fit this defense, however he will fit the bill of backup OLB (where Spragan would be if he stayed).

I really like Pope but I think he is to small to start in this league

Now that Saban's supposedly strict position-specific physical criteria are no longer a near absolute barrier for unproven players, the guy may get a fair shot. His play in the past has demonstrted nothing that indicates he can't be a starter.
