I was wondering what everyone thinks about Math Roth's role will be this upcoming year. With the shift towards a more 3-4 style of defense (Capers related), can we assume Jason Taylor will likely move into the OLB position more often? If this is the case, will Roth's role increase substantially? I do read the forums often and I don't think this has been discussed too often. I apologize in advance if it has. I know Saban has said we will use the hybrid system often next year, but with Capers being a 3-4 type guy, I think we'll be using it much more than we had before. I know our D lacks some key positions for an effective 3-4 defense like a prototypical nose tackle. Any thoughts?

I think any speculation on what types of D we'll play are premature at this stage; the major deciding factor will be how the players perform and what systems we can play based on the players we have.

As for Matt Roth, he looks to be locked in as a LDE in either system, and as such is stuck behind Kevin Carter. The better he plays though the more time he should get, and its good all round as it'll keep Carter fresher and healthier.

I think his role will increase more if we indeed do switch more to a 3-4 especially on 1st downs.

Holliday showed weakness on running downs last season and Roth was very good at the point of attack so I suspect we will see more of him in probable running situations but it is all speculation at this point in time.

I hope Roth gets some more playing time this year. I was really high on him when we drafted him last year and i want to see some production out of him. He dosen't seem undersized but the things he has to work on is his technique and his stregnth. He will be better next year but he will break out in his 3rd year.

Roth can only get better. Saban will be sure of that! With a year under his belt he just may be the most improved player going into next season.

he should. he is talented and he has a year under his belt. i think he will help a lot more on D# this year.

i love roth man, i hope he gets some time this year to show what he got

If a pick that high cant make it in,
It's bad.

I hope he'll do well.

If he doesn't crack the starting lineup this year, he's a bust IMO.

So what you're saying is...if Roth doesn't beat Carter, who has nearly 100 career sacks, he's a bust? In just his second year?

This is a "wait for camp" question. Someone, Carter maybe?, was quoted a couple of weeks back that Roth had progressed rapidly in his strength and conditioning. He is behind Holliday and Carter on the depth chart, both solid veterans, so we will see come camp.
