Of course he will. Not only does Ross make the wrong decision by keeping Joe, but there is virtually no chance that Coyle is let go while the retarded one is here. We are going to have, at least, another year of on-field decisions that make absolutely no sense. Welcome another year of mediocrity.

The immediate future is sealed for Joe Philbin, who got the big endorsement for 2015 from owner Stephen Ross. The immediate future is sealed for general manager Dennis Hickey, who obviously has done nothing to deserve even scrutiny about whether he should return. And, as I write in my column in today's Miami Herald, Ryan Tannehill has earned his ongoing spot as the Dolphins quarterback.

I could make the argument Tannehill is better at what he does and has improved with on-the-job training than either the owner or the head coach.
And that brings us to the ripple effects of the Ross decision he announced Sunday.
With Philbin assured of coming back, it raises the question about what assistants the head coach will be bringing back. Philbin is not big on change and fought hard last season to try to keep offensive coordinator Mike Sherman and even offensive line coach Jim Turner when it was clear to anyone with eyes both had to go.
It is pretty clear now Philbin needs to continue upgrading his coaching staff with a better defensive coordinator. But my guess is the coach is going to stand behind defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle.
This even if as the facts say Coyle's defense has regressed every season he's been the DC in Miami.
Consider that Sunday's 37-35 victory was the fourth time this season the Dolphins have allowed 30 points or more. The Patriots scored 41 last week. The Broncos scored 39. The Chiefs scored 34 points.
And now the Dolphins have allowed 336 points with one game left to play. So with one game to play the defense has already allowed more points than it did last year. The problem is last year the defense allowed more points than the year before. And the year before it allowed more points than the year before.
So the defense has allowed more points than the previous year each year Coyle has been in charge. That is, by any standard, is heading in the wrong direction with the most important statistic of all -- points

In all seriousness . . . what the hell happened to the defense. We were clamoring this unit as a top 5 unit, putting up top 3 stats the first half of the season. When we shut out San Diego, people were legit scared of the Dolphins.

We go up to Denver and I guess the altitude must of had a long term effect on this group because it's just been dreadful since then. That was LESS than a month ago.

This collapse and the fact that Coyle's defense can't stop a team from driving down the field in crunch time is the reason he will not be back next year. He's just too stubborn to adjust and it's really hurt him, his defense and this team over the last month.

It's really puzzling.

I think I am actually OK with Philbin coming back if Coyle goes...I just have little faith that will happen. Defensive gameplans were poor this year

I'll have difficulty doing my annual "hope springs anew" routine next August if the coaching staff comes back completely intact.

If Coyle is replaced with a more capable coordinator, sure.

If Rex is the DC, well then...that'll be a whole different conversation.

Coyle stays folks. Terrible DC, but Joe is empowered now. Coyle is going no place. It is up to Hickey to improve the personnel to mask Coyle's shortcomings.

In my mind Rex would be the only guaranteed upgrade.

What is the difference between the defense the first half of the year and the second half? At the halfway mark, the Fins defense was be toasted by the league......and we are a dumpster fire here at the end. What the heck happened? I know injuries and lack of depth will be a big part of that, but is that all of it?

this is my biggest beef with this team.. lets face, whether you hate Tannehill or love him, no matter what the score is, if we are winning 40-38 or 20-17, do you really think the dolphin defense will come up with a stop..

this defense sucks and i dont know who to blame for it.... coyle? philbin? talent?? all of the above

If hickey repeats his draft success going into next year that seems very doable.

I think what happened was, we got figured out.
We could stop the run pretty well in the first 2 games, but everyone here knows our LB corps is depleted, and ineffective against the run. Game 3 against KC hits, and Kniles Davis has a field day.
Then the Jags said, OK, we'll unleash Denard Robinson on this Fins defense. Sure enough, he played well too, and if not for Bortles having an inexperienced game, the run/pass would be balanced and the Fins may not have won that game.
Then, you get Denver doing the same deal -- Fins defense huh? They don't even know they're not good against the run, so how about we just pound the rock, RELENTlessly, until we simply can't anymore. We all know how that ended.

Ever since then, it's same deal. Coyle's team is just coughing up the run time and again; it's getting them gassed early, and the secondary can't cover the field because they're so worked from having to make extra stops and tackles. The prized pass-rush can't do much because it's a handoff before you know it, time and again. We're unable to force teams to pass because the LB corps is so weak in getting to the point of attack, and so our D gets tired early every game now.

I can see this playing out..Rex is our DC next year and brings a solid, weekly performance. Phlbin flubs more calls next year showing he cannot change his true inadequate colors. Annnnd enter Rex a third of the season in as interim HC. The team responds great to make a playoff appearance and Rex is given a 3 year HC contract at season's end.
What do yuo rhink?

It doesn't help that a lot of Jeff Ireland's trash is playing, especially in the secondary. Philip Wheeler, Jason Trusnik (not necessarily his fault but he should not be starting), Jamar Taylor, Jimmy Wilson.

Rex will be head coach in Atlanta. Bank it

I'm hearing Chicago Bears for Rex. 30 years after his dad won super bowl there
