DAVIE, Fla. -- Here was a big selling point for the Miami Dolphins to give starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill a $96 million contract extension this week: His numbers improved in each of his three seasons.
The Dolphins view Tannehill, 26, as an ascending player. In their view Tannehill hasn't reached his ceiling, which is why they are confident their six-year contract with $45 million in guarantees will be worth the investment.

"The biggest thing that I've been excited about is, I've seen the development with Ryan over a period of three years," Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin said. "I think he has great potential, I'm fully confident that he's going to get better and better and better, that's what I'm really excited about."
But there are risks involved. What if Tannehill's numbers do not improve in Year 4?
Tannehill had a career year in 2014 with 4,045 yards, 66.4 completion percentage, 27 touchdowns and a 92.8 passer rating. Those will not be easy numbers to top.
Tannehill must be at his best consistently for Miami to end its six-year playoff drought. There are several areas where he must improve: his deep ball, holding the ball too long at times and fourth-quarter performance among others.
Another challenge will be jelling with new receivers. Both of Miami's starting receivers from 2014 -- Mike Wallace and Brian Hartline -- are gone. So are starting tight end Charles Clay and key backup Brandon Gibson. The Dolphins acquired wide receiver Kenny Stills in a trade with the New Orleans Saints to replace Wallace's speed. They also drafted first-round pick DeVante Parker and signed veterans Greg Jennings and Jordan Cameron.
"Obviously it's a challenge to get on the same page," Tannehill admitted. "It's been great to work with those guys starting back in March on our own and now once the offseason program started. Seeing those guys improve with our route concepts, the way we run routes, being able to coach those guys through the process, has been really fun for me."
The Dolphins need Tannehill to develop into a star more than ever. The big contract only adds to the pressure at Miami's quarterback position.

To be honest, the only number I want to see rise is in the win column. As long as we don't see the wrong numbers increase (int. etc) and the other numbers hover right around where they are at AND we win, I am a happy camper and think the FO did the right thing. But IMO, if I had to answer I do think his TDs will rise slightly (30-35), his int's go down (10-12), passing yards rise slightly (4,400-4,600), and the end all be all stat, his YPA will find it's way to 7.4-7.9. And with that, I think his QBR will get in the 95-99 range. Yeah, I am pretty excited and optimistic to see what happens this yr. with the new additions on O and D.

He's gotten progressively better and better , I don't think 27 tds is his ceiling .

Matter of fact . In my money fantasy leagues I'm planning on going strong at wr and rb through the early rounds and getting lots of value out of Tannehill in the later rounds .

I think they may go up a little, but I think were are very close to his ceiling...

He had good #s last year, can they go up? I think they since he will be more comfortable in Lazor’s O and if the new additions are as advertised BUT it’s about more than the #s. He can see a decrease in #s and be a much better QB. I think most fans and media overreact w/ regard to #s. It’s more about how they are accumulated than the accumulation.

You think? I think he has 2 more seasons of improving. That's how high i think his ceiling is. Top 5 in the league. He has been improving greatly every year.

In most cases , qbs who have Lots of yards few ints and lots of tds are playing at a very high level .

I can't imagine a scenario where a guy throws 35tds and 10 ints with 4,400 yards and isn't having a Heck of a season . If a team can't win with those type of numbers , then it's about how bad the defense is IMO.

With a healthier OL and better WR corps I don't think it's hard to envision that RT's numbers will not go up.

How often has Tannehill lit up the scoreboard in the 4th quarter to come from behind or to completely crush a losing opponent? Not many, if at all. However, to be fair, he did cut down on the INTs this past season. It was sickening to watch passes batted at the line and picked off, and passes intercepted late in the game when they had to score.

IMO, I have seen nothing from Tannehill to show that he's a franchise QB. I don't think that he has "it" and is able to take over a game in crunchtime. Maybe in time he'll get better, but so far, during the Philbin and Tannehill Show, I don't trust Tannehill or the offensive playcalling when the game is on the line. This is why I'd like to see them have a dominating power rushing attack to bulldoze their way in for a TD, or to pick up that 1st Down to run out the clock. I'm tired of watching an offense that throws a 5 yard pass when it's 3rd and 8. I think that Tannehill could be a very good game manager if he only had a decent o-line and a strong rushing game.

He wanted Winston. I think that says it all lol

I did and in 3 years we will are who was right about that one...

And what is wrong with a 30/10 qb with 95 qb rating? When I said slightly you act like I am insulting him. Man if you don't assume the dude will be the next Tom Brady with legs you are seen as negative....
