Mark Maske from the Washington Post wrote this at the end of his (good) article:

"Upshaw has said it would become increasingly difficult to complete a labor deal once this year's free agent market opens, given that players would be on the verge of reaching a cap-less season. Upshaw also has said that if the league plays a season without a salary cap, he doesn't envision a cap ever returning."

I know this is early speculation, but what do you guys think? Is this mere posturing or a realistic possibility? Mark Maske is a very good writer, IMO and his article is worth reading.

Also, supposing that the NFL goes capless, how financially strong are the Dolphins and will they be able to keep up with the Cowboys, Redskins and Jets when it comes to economics?

my fingers are crossed that it is just posturing, but with the deadline upon us, you have to start to believe that it is a definate possibility.

One NFL team official nailed it with his comment, "I can't believe we are about to cut the head off of the Golden Goose." :shakeno:

I think Pasquarelli quoted one owner as saying it would be "Bloody Thursday" http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/columns/story?columnist=pasquarelli_len&id=2348970

For the sake of what makes the NFL great, I sure hope Upshaw is posturing, they need to get a deal done!

If they do, they will, it will be the worst thing to ever happen to the league. One uncapped year will make it so that the cap will never come back. Revenue sharing will fall apart, and we'll have 5 teams with all the best players. If it does happen like that, I just hope Wayne will be willing to be in the top 2..

Wayne, has the money. The fins are one of the wealthiest franchises in the league, in the top 5.

I'm not so sure about that. Wayne is a businessman first and he won't make any moves that will cause him to lose money on the franchise. It doesn't matter if he is one of the wealthiest owners or not because, IMO he has a bottom line to the way he does business. Trust me when I say, that he would have hesitated to hire people like Saban and upgrade the stadium if he didn't believe that he'd get a return on his money because they were/are investments...and his limits still center around returns on his investments.

One big issue we have is that Dolphin games don't sell out as much as they do in other cities. A large group of Miami fans are fickle (I know, I grew up there) and their levels of attendance fluctuate with the opponent and the success of the team. Obviously, I'm not refering to folks on this board but just a general assessment. In other words, if this were to happen, I have alot of concerns about our ability to stay top 5 in the big name/big money signing department.

Also,Wayne runs the Dolphins more as a hobby and passion instead of a business. I'm sure that he prefers to make a bundle, but I think that if it comes to no cap, that he will spend what ever is necessary.

Then why the upgrades to the stadium? It isn't like he thinks of it as his toy

Lord, a capless season would be bedlam. I really hope that this thing gets done. Football is great the way it is. The commish should just hire hitmen and get this thing in place any way possible!

Seems like the owners could still agree to a self-imposed cap...it certainly would be in their interest to do so.

Just like baseball!!

If the cap gets eliminated then the NFL will be like MLB where everyone knows that about 70% of the teams in MLB have no shot of competing for a World Series title. As far as Wayne is concerned, he has yet to shell out money for a marquee free agent. Nick Saban is by far his largest "acquisition" since he has owned the team. I thought to myself that this season would have been an acid test for Wayne because Nick will ask for some marquee free agent signings unlike his predeccesor Wannstedt where I am still sceptical about Wayne's "true" love for the Dolphins. Drew Brees will go a long way that Wayne has real intentions of bringing the Vince Lombardi trophy to Miami. We'll see.:dolphins:

I think it is a bad move if the NFL even go 1 season without a cap, I feel the cap gives each team a fair chance and it also keeps players from demanding insane money. I think they will also get less competitive if only the rich teams get the players which will make the NFL less popular and right now the NFL is the most popular sport by far

You seem uninformed & biased. That is all I have. We have one of (if not the best) owner in ALL of professional sports. Admittedly I am biased. But less uninformed.

And one more thing. You are a "U" fan. They have WAY worse administration problems. Shalala is an absolutely horrible university president. Paul Dee is a 2nd rate AD. And Coker, as likeable as he is, would rank near the bottom of quality coaches at blue chip programs. And you want Wayne to sell the Dolphins??? To who? Ronco????
