Will this defense be able to be dominant with our current players

We are lacking in a lot of positions on defense. Our secondary is not looking good right now. We are replacing sam madison with will allen. Will Allen is definately not on the level of madison. He is a decent player but should not be the number 1 cornerback. Another concern I have is that we are also replacing Lance Shulters with Deke Cooper. Again Cooper is not as good as a player as Lance. This worries me that we are replacing our defensive secondary players with less talented guys. To be fair, these signings were good for depth. There is a lot of offseason left to address these positions. There are still some quality players in free agency who could fill into these positions nicely. Both Ty Law and Charles Woodson would be quality signings if they came at a reasonable price. I can't imagine they could get anywhere near the asking demands of Arrington. Another to address these positions is through the draft. The draft has some very talented secondary players....

Onto another subject on the defense. We need another linebacker on the team. We have 2 quality players already at the position. We need to get one more good linebacker. The past few years that last spot of the linebacker position has hurt us. When Seau has gone down the past 2 years our defense has suffered tremendously. We need to get a guy who can fill that position and play somewhere near the level Seau did with us and not getting hurt.

With all this being said, our defense is not in a terrible situation. It may sound that way by the way I talked about it. It will be important for the dolphins organization to focus on fixing these areas of the defense. The defense has many pieces to the puzzle already. We just need to find those other parts. If we can find those last parts this could be one of the best defenses in the league. There are many talented players to address these problems. It would not be smart to pass up the opportunity.

Yes because of 2 men, Nick Saban and Dom Capers.

I hope we can trade down and get Lawson late in the first and a quality DB in the second. I think thats very realistic.

Well, I was just reading my new edition of Dolphin Digest, and (take it for what it's worth, and I agree with them,) they say at this point in their careers Will Allen is better than Sam Madison. Younger and faster. (and I LOVE Sam Madison.)

Our other starter last year was Travis Daniels. He has another year under his belt and will continue to improve.

Will Poole is back. He looked great his rookie year and it'll be more than a year-and-a-half since his injury when the season starts.

Tebucky Jones was hurt for half the season at safety. The only significant loss in the secondary is Lance Schulters. If we can get one more playmaking safety, our secondary will be fine because the cornerback position looks fine right now.

Even Nick Saban has revealed that we got younger, faster and more athletic there.

To tell you the truth I am not all that worried about our secondary, which, i know seems strange, but with both saban and capers at the helm they must have seen something in both allen and cooper. both Saban and Capers are defensive masterminds and I think they both saw something in those two and are simply going to make them both better at thier positions with the knowledge they bring to the table for this dolphins organization. Although I could be wrong you could be right about the depth part too especially if we go out and pick up some stud DB or safety in the draft. I dont know, I just think there is more to our secondary than a lot of people think. JMO

Bell and Tillman are better than Jones, anyway.

They should get a legitamite chance for a starting role.

If we can get a LB in the draft (Lawson?) and a quality S later on, I think the defense can be very good.

I couldn't disagree more. We are only lacking at saftey and LB in my opinion which both can be filled via draft and the remainder of free agency. Right now this is a very good football team and we will only get better. Sam Madison is no longer a great corner in this league. It would be a stretch to say he is even a good corner. Will Allen is better than a good corner but not quite 'great' yet.

Also, I don't believe Deke Cooper will be Shulters replacement. Renaldo Hill should be the new FS and a draft pick likely to be the SS (either that or Yerimiah Bell).

Our 2006 Defense looks pretty darn good to me at this point.

Pos/Player
RE Jason Taylor (could drop to an LB in 3-4)
DT Keith Traylor (would be NT in 3-4)
DT Vonnie Holliday
LE Kevin Carter (could drop to an LB in 3-4)
OLB Channing Crowder
MLB Zach Thomas
OLB Sedrick Hodge or Donnie Spragan or rookie
CB Will Allen
CB Will Poole
FS Renaldo Hill
SS Donte Whitner (at least I believe he'll be our guy)

Our D was dominating at times last year despite having a terrible secondary. San Diego couldn't do any thing against us until very late in that game. The second half of the come back game against Buffalo our defense was shut down as well. Point being our defense has improved a ton and should be able to dominte much more then last years average defense.

Oh and for the record Allen > Madison :)

That sure would be nice. We could trade Ricky for I think a 2nd and like a 6th or maybe even 5th. We could then go WR in the first then DB in the second. That would be the best situation IMO.

yea that seems realistic or we could trade down and get bobby carpenter if hes there and get a db like you said in the second.we are just really young in our secondary right now with poole and daniels being the young ones at cb

I think our DBs are fine. Maybe add a SS like Watkins in the third and we are solid. We have a lot of pretty good players and when you add in the good competion in camp that should only make them better. The only thing I think we are really lacking is a hard hitting safety. Someone to put fear in WRs crossing the middle. From what Jax fans say he seems more like a FS Great cover skills not the best tackler). I'm sure Saban can improve that with them but I really feel we have al FS but no SS. The good thing about that though is they should provide better coverage down field though as that seems to be most good SSs weakness. With our front 7 being solid and good tackling CBs that might not be to big of an issue.

I dont feel we will get the opprotunity to trade down so I see us drafting like this.

1st-Top OLB ( Greenway, Carpenter, Lawson, Whimbly)
3rd- Pat Watkins S FSU (basically top S available
4th-Montavios Stanley NT Louisville
7th-QB
2 7ths- Let Houch pick 2 guys he feels he can work with

Add those 3 defensive players and I feel we could have a great D with a nice balance of youth and Veteran leadership. Not to mention we would be extremly deep throughout our lineup.
