................. Damon Huard.......... Jay Fiedler.......... Ray Lucas.......... Brian Griese......... AJ Feeley............... and now Cleo Lemon............ and no I'm not going to pinpoint how he turns out because nobody has any clue.

But seriously, are we ever going to see this franchise make a worthy attempt at finding a legitimate QB threat? I ask this not because I'm stressing out over Lemon, in fact I'd rather have him on the roster than Feeley (especially now that we're not on the hook for his salary next year). But his aquisition does, yet again, remind me of all the lifelong backups we've had manning the QB spot. Will this team ever be in position again to draft a QB with serious pedigree? Will we ever see this team bundle together players/picks for a QB who's proven himself in this league? Will serious efforts ever be made to find a guy who's not just serviceable if surrounded by the right combination of players, but a player who makes the rest of the guys around him better?

I understand that not every QB comes in the 1st round. But that doesn't guarentee every QB drafted 4th-7th rounds will turn out to be the next Tom Brady either. I've personally just had enough with this trend of teams bargain hunting for QB's to man the most important position on any football team. I'm sick of this franchise shopping around for QB's with coupons, mail inserts, and Sunday morning advertisement clippings in it's hands.

It would appear that it takes an aweful lot of things to go right in order for these diamond's in the rough to pan out.

Lokking at our qb roster we have to find someone next year or saban's going to be going the way of wanny and jj

I fully expect a high draft pick or big FA pickup next year.

Lemon is a very good developmental prospect.

You don't bank your QB position on someone who's a developmental prospect.

i have faith in meuller. although lemon likely wont be the starter, i think the move is positive sign the fins will be proactive in getting guys they feel have talent

another thing i take from this move is that meuller will pick guys based on his own information, rather than inferring talent like spielman did with feeley

with that said, i hope saban ignores linehan if he insists gus can get the job done. if gus starts next year, you can write off taylor and thomas every winning a super bowl, imo

EDIT: also, for once, i would like to see a legetimately open QB competition

No one ever said this guy was going to be our QB of the future.... He could just be a serviceable backup that has good prospects... and is a heck of a lot cheaper than Feeley. For all we know Feeley might have had a negative attitude after being demoted and might have been a locker room cancer - not saying he was, but we don't know for sure here. Chances are he wasn't the most fun guy to be around after the demotion.

There is the removal of ties to the old management, this was a huge break.

I have no idea what position Lemon will serve on our team, but i don't think its set in stone that he is our QB of the future, so i wish people would stop freaking out. Some people just act like if we spend a first round pick on a QB, it will work out.... well more often than not i'd say it doesn't. Add to that we won't have as high of a draft pick next year as we do this year, and if you think Leinart of those guys will be around when we pick, i'd say you are wrong.

Saban and his crew allegedly have a good eye for talent and felt this guy was worth bringing in... so let's leave it at that.

And I never said he was. But answer the question, do you foresee this regime trying to continue to get by on developing career backups or project players? Or do you see us making a major move for an impact QB?

I see us taking a QB in the draft that we plan on making our future starting QB.

Bingo !!!!!

Trade with the texans next year . Ricky Williams for David Carr !!!!!!

The problem lies in the fact that these guys, through the draft or free agency, don't come with a "franchise qb" garantee. Yes a proven player or a early draft choice may be less risky of busting than an unproven player and a later draft choice but you have to pay to find out.

In other words.........

Ryan Leaf, lower risk of bust but higher price to find out if he's the real deal.

Jay Fiedler, higher risk of bust but costs much less to find out.

Now when either one of these two methods produce a franchise type QB it is worth it. But which one is better I don't know. Carson Palmer has panned out well thus far....... Joey Harrington..... not so much. It's kinda like playing poker.... you need to have a good strategy but in the end you'll need a little luck to get the right cards in your hand. But before you get the cards you gotta place your bet. So then you gotta ask yourself.... do you feel lucky.

Now to actually answer your question...... yes. I see us contunually developing players and/or making a major moves until we get a guy at qb that Nick & Co. feel can be or become our next franchise QB. These of course are merely my opinions so take em for what they are worth. I doubt they are worth Feely and a sixth rounder.:D

Amen brother. Agree 110%, Ive been saying this every year since Marino left. It seems like we've been trying to bargain shop for a good Qb. Obviously you have to pay for a good Qb. The major one that still sticks in my craw is not drafting Brees and instead taking a nickel back in Fletcher (and a bad one at that), it was obvious that Brees was an upgrade talent wise over Fiedler yet we didnt take him because we were unwilling to spend a first on him. JJ and Wanny never deemed a Qb worthy of an early selection, this was a major, major oversight.
If Saban does not realize this, especially after watching Gus play like a backup then he will not succeed in the NFL. I am favor of us doing whatever it takes, including trading up or with future draft picks to get our future Qb. How anyone can watch this sorry Qb play for like 6 years or more and feel that we need to spend late round picks or go after backups is beyond me. It costs money and a high draft pick 9/10 times. Brady's are once in a lifetime picks, look around playoff time at the teams in the playoffs, they will have top draft picks under center with the exception of Tom Brady and like 1 or 2 other guys.
