Manny Wright and Kevin Vickerson.

We drafted 2 DT and we also signed an undrafted DT so that's 3 knew guys plus we still have K. Carter...V. Holliday...Zgonina...and K. Traylor...and i bet i forgot a few others on the bench...i'm a little worried that M. Wright might not be the player Saban thought he was going to be when we drafted him. also...didn't he miss some mandatory "celebration/award" meeting and he wasn't excused? and he was no where to be found?

i'm starting to think that Saban may be fed up with him...what do you guys think? i understand that K. Vickerson had a knee injury and was hurt all last year and may not be ready or 100% healthy but what's going on with Manny Wright?

Go Fins!!!

Actually, Wright was excused.

Zgonina is getting old. So is Traylor. Holliday and Carter are no spring chickens either. More DT's could be more motivation for Wright, and Vickerson, even though he seems to have potential, is still no sure thing.

Rod Wright is insurance for Vickerson's injury(Although doesnt make much sense considering Rod is injured) and some say they might try to make Evans into a nose tackle. I think Manny safe but your right we are crowded at the position which could be a good thing in a 3-4 defense.

Yeah, we have some age, but those 4 you mentioned are going to make the team in all probability. Plus you have Vickerson, Wright, Shaw, Evans and Wright. There may even be others I forgot. That's at least 9 DT's. How many will Saban keep? Hopefully he can stash a couple of the practice squad without them being plucked by other teams.

Carter and Holliday are 3-4 DE's. Zgonina is really old now for a DT and Traylor future in football is still up in the air is it not?

Zgonina might not, and Rod Wright might go on the DL. Shaw got cut and re-signed about a half-dozen times last year, so I don't expect him to make our roster.

Seen this similar question a few times already...

Manny is not a full time 3-4 NT, only a 'filler'. He's more of a 3-4 LDE, 4-3 DT (under).
Vickerson is not a full time 3-4 NT, only a 'filler'. He's more of a 3-4 RDE, 4-3 DT (either)
Traylor is old, Jeff Z is old and only a 'filler' at NT (if that), while Holliday play's the same role as Manny.
This should be Traylor and Holliday's last years as Phin's and I doubt Jeff Z. is still on the roster come opening day. Carter's status in '07 depends on the development of the young guys.

Roth/Manny Evans/R.Wright Vickerson/???
LDE

Though Wright, Wright, Vickerson, Evans, Fifita, Holiday, Tralyor, and Zgonina all are listed as a DT they do play different positions. Additionally we spell guys alot on the D-Line to kep them fresh so having 5-6 players for those 2 spots is likely on our rosters. Also bear in mind that when we play a 3-4 that the smaller DT like M. Wright and Holliday would prob play DE and big guys like Tralyor and Fifita would be the NT.

You also play different guys on running downs and passing downs. I am happy we addressed the issue with DT. It was a bit late in the draft but hopefully these guys can contribute.

Look for M. Wright to spell Holliday alot this year and get some good PT. Maybe spell Traylor on passing downs too. I just hope one of these big guys can step up and be the plug that Traylor is. Looking forward to seeing these guys in TC.

Manny's more of a 3-4 LDE, 4-3 DT (under). He can only spot fill at 3-4 NT.
Vickerson's more of a 3-4 RDE, 4-3 DT (either). He can only spot fill at NT (yet to be seen if he can start there).

Traylor is old, Jeff Z. is old and and ineffective at NT, while Holliday play's the same role as Manny. Also, this should be Traylor and Holliday's last years as Phin's and I doubt Jeff Z. is still on the roster come opening day. Carter's status in '07 depends on the development of the young guys.

Roth/Manny - F.A./Evans/R.Wright - Vickerson/Carter

... a rough guess at the DL in '07

Vickerson is probably no better than the guys we drafted, and Wright is still an unknown. Just stockpiling big guys to see which guys work out and which dont.

I think the one thing you can trust Saban on is that each player has a value to the team and no one is untouchable and he will take a guy based on value relative to his draft position or his contract offer. We have already seen that when that value is set with a FA/trade...he does not back off it (to Nick..it is what it is, very similar to John Fox/Marty Hurney @ Carolina), just like the #2 pick last year. I honestly think that Saban just saw the two DT's as the best valued player at their draft position, and Fifta as a prospect for little cost. It will be interesting to find out (if we can) what kind of guaranteed money Nick gives the UFA's...that will go a long way toward figuring out the camp fodder from "real" prospects in NS's view.

Zgonina, Traylor, and Holliday are gone after this season, plus Carter's contract hits the escalator part. Also keep in mind that in the 3-4, the linemen other than the nose tackle need to be sized more like 4-3 defensive tackles, so I would expect the more athletic of our younger guys to be be moved outside.

Our D line could look like this this year

Wright Traylor Carter
Next year
Wright Vickerson Wright

I think Manny will be fine there is some age on the DL and Rod Wright said Coach worked him out at DE. So I wouldn't worry about it too much.
