The Detroit Lions select....

Let's look at this hard for a moment. It seems that most mocks have Matthew Stafford going #1 and to be honest I just don't see it. If Sam Bradford would have declared he would have been the pick but I don't think Staffords play at Georgia merits the #1 pick. He has an NFL arm but he lacks the intangibles. What big game has he won? I just don't think it will happen.

Andre Smith has gotten plenty of attention for this pick and I just don't see it. In my mock I have the Lions taking Smith with the 1st pick but just because I think they will take him doesn't mean I think it is a good value. He is nowhere near as good as Jake Long who was this pick last year. Andre Smith has terrible footwork and is abused by speed-rushers. He has red flags such as the fact that he missed the biggest game of his life because he was taking money from an agent. I think it has to be impossible to take a guy with red flags #1 overall but if someone would, it would be the Lions.

Michael Crabtree is interesting because we know that the Lions love drafting Wide Receivers in Round 1 such as Calvin Johnson, Carlos Rogers, Mike Williams, and Roy Williams. I just think this time with a new front office they know they have to fill other holes.

The smart money for me is to start with defense. If I were the GM of the Lions the pick would be Aaron Curry. Not only do you draft a versatile linebacker who has the ability to play both inside and outside but you draft a leader. Aaron Curry is a vocal player and could be the Ray Lewis of the Lions.

It will be interesting to see where they go ...I think the pick will be Andre Smith but I also think the pick SHOULD be Aaron Curry

Completely understand your thinking. Thats why I went Monroe at 1. I think they will pick Stafford, but I wouldn't. Lets face facts here, Detroit will still suck, still have the No1 pick in 2010, & then they will pick Bradford.

I think they'll get Stafford. They have Daunte, Stanton, and no one else. They've got alot of problems on that team though.

Its actually Charles Rodgers  Carlos Rodgers actually plays for the skins.

I think Stafford is the way to go because with the O-Line being deep again this year you can still get a very good Lineman at 21. While I would really doubt you get a Matt Stafford at 21.

I would actually argue that the O-line class is worst then last year, it is just the demand for the position has gone up drastically. Teams have seen rookie OT's dominant and they want that (Long, Clady, Thomas.)

I think both Long and Clady stand out head and shoulders as prospects over all the T's this year. This is not just hindsight, many experts had a problem distinguishing between who was the better prospect last year.

I know people knocked Jake for beinga bit sloppy in pass protection but he clearly did not have the problems that Smith showed especially during the BCS game. His heart was also never called into question like Ohers (who I believe to be the best prospect this year.) Monroe has kind of becme the default #1 tackle now, however he had a very inconsistent junior year at VA.

I think they go Stafford too. A new coaching regime almost always means a new QB.

I don't think you can knock a guy for no big game wins. How many did Peyton have in college and he went #1.

if it was anybody but the lions i'd say crabtree was the most impressive offensive player i saw all year. but with their past WR baggage i'd bet they'd opt for a QB. if i could pick any player in the class regardless of need i'd take lb rey maluaga. 2nd option:usc safety mays. both are can't miss picks.

The Lions should take a page from Parcells, Ireland and Co. Build the offensive line and defensive front 7 first, and from the inside out. The one thing the Lions need to do here is take the safest pick, the player least likely to be a bust. I agree with Real, that player is none other than Aaron Curry. Come back at #20 and look for line help, if one of the top 4 OTs drop, take him, or else perhaps Eben Britton, Tyson Jackson, someone like that.

detroit should trade the #1 down a little bit if they are able to do so

Just like last year, there is no "true #1" that everyone just has to have. (Of course, noone knew at the time what Matt Ryan would turn out to be...I bet we could have traded our #1 real easy if they knew that ahead of time...anyway, I digress.)

The first ten picks are about of equal quality, with only Crabtree being the real standout...and he is a receiver, which marks him down IMO. So, the teams with the first 10 picks aren't really in a need to move up. For those picking later, moving up a dozen picks or so will be costly.

I may be inclined to take smith or curry at #1. knowing nothing of there defense though, I would question if you take curry, how well does ernie sims move to another position.

If I am the lions, I am calling every FO in the league, and asking what they will give for the #1 overall, than selling to the highest bidder.

accumulate picks, get the hell out of the big guaranteed money you have to pay the first pick in the draft.
