I think the "setback" that Dion Jordan is currently experiencing is the Dolphins being coy about their plans for him. Maybe when they drafted him they had hopes that he'd be the starting DE opposite Wake from day 1...who knows. But watching Olivier Vernon this preseason, it's evident to me that the kid can man the position effectively. He flashes bullrush ability, is able to knife in to the QB's position using speed, and reliably sets the edge. Is able to clean up plays once the QB starts to move around or scramble. Strong hands at the point of attack, rarely gets dominated by offensive linemen.

Anyways, this gives the Dolphins the ability to get creative with Dion Jordan. I expect him to play alot standing up at LBer as he did at Oregon. Our first five games are against teams with capable to elite tight ends. Jordan Cameron, Dwayne Allen, Coby Fleener, Tony Gonzalez, Jimmy Graham, Ed Dickson. From everything i've seen of Dion, he moves as well as or better than any of these tight ends, with the only exception being maybe Jimmy Graham.

I've always wondered what the Dolphins practice inside the practice bubble in Davie. Last year, we didn't see too many comeback routes for Hartline in the preseason. When the season came around, Hartline on comeback routes was virtually unstoppable. I think it was evident that that was one thing they were determined to keep off film. I think the Dolphins have Dion doing alot of work in coverage in that bubble. I'm excited to see him cover tight ends from opposing teams. Line Jordan up as a LBer and the options Coyle has on defense are endless.

Imagine if in Dion Jordan, we have a guy that can shut down the best tight ends in the league. He can hit them at the line of scrimmage, and run with them past it. If my theory is correct, and if this is part of the way they will feature Dion Jordan, and if he is as effective as i think he will be..that might account for saving 1 touchdown a game. Tight ends have killed us over the years, could this be the piece that essentially helps eliminates them, forcing the Brady's and Brees's of the league to look away from their favorite receiving options? I can't think of a player that was a tight end covering specialist. With the emergence of that position, did we find a chess piece that renders them moot?

I,for one, am thrilled at the possibility. Looking forward to hearing everyone's thoughts.

We drafted Jordan to be our joker, to move around and create havock. I'm sure he'll cover a TE from time to time, but I doubt that will be his primary purpose. We drafted him to sack the qb, strip the ball, bat balls at the LOS, etc.

I don't think he's going to shut down the best tight ends in the league, because even the best corners in the league don't shut down the best wide receivers. But I do think what he presents is an X-factor player on defense who can do so many things well that the offense doesn't know what his role will be on any given play. Tight ends are mismatch players on offense because they can block for the run, they're too fast to be covered by linebackers, and too big and strong to be covered by safeties and corners. Jordan can be a "mismatch" player on the other side of the ball, perhaps.

Why do so many people think the dolphins were hiding some secret defensive package with him while he was doing should rehab?

I mean, I hope it's true, but is there any actual evidence of this? Ive seen multiple people here saying that.

I too believe that his main job will be that of Joker. He could though, from time to time, cover TE's is certain schemes.

he will be our de opposite of cam wake but covering tes from time to time is a good idea it most likely not happening

People that start threads like this did not watch Dion Jordan in Oregon.

If you watched him at all, you would know it would be a bad thing to keep him with his hands on the ground for all 3 downs. He has great coverage ability, he wasn't an overly dominant pass rusher. In fact, most dominant pass rushers in the NFL weren't dominant in their pass rush in college.

I'm sure we never planned on using him as starting DE day 1. I'm sure the initial front 4 was going to be Odrick Soliai Starks and Wake, then on 3rd you take out soliai, kick in Odrick and put in Jordan.

the best way to use Jordan right now would be in Koa Misi's spot, standing up on 1st and 2nd and bring him down on 3rd.

Now, he may develop into a beast pass rusher by year 2, in which case you can keep him down if you have a solid linebacker in Misi's spot.

Now with the emergence of Vernon, It tells me even more that we will let Misi walk and let Jordan take his place. The interesting thing will be how we use 3 beast pass rushers on 3rd next year. Some teams do it, a 5-2

So Dion Jordan coming out of college, the one thing that was never questioned about him was his pass rush ability. But you're saying he's not a good pass rusher...maybe he will be in year 2? The only knock on him was his strength v the run.

I'm not saying he's a bad pass rusher, I'm saying the opposite, thats why he would be a 3rd down specialist for us. He has the capability of becoming an elite pass rusher.

But I have no idea where you're coming from, you do realize he had 5 sacks his last year lol that doesn't yell dominant pass rusher. in fact, oregon used him A LOT in coverage

I was saying this when we drafted him

I feel like since he got here, Ireland has been looking for that linebacker who could be kryptonite for tight ends. AJ edds and Dansby, both touted for their ability to cover tight ends. I truly think that's one of the main duties for Jordan, especially this year. Take away a safety valve for these qbs and the entire defense- especially Cam Wake- will be appreciative

Well, when ross asked them around the table which player would they draft if they could they all said Jordan. Its probably because they saw everything he did at Oregon. He played vs. WR at times.

I would agree his main purpose is to rush the passer but from where is the question. If we did not have Vernon looking so good he would be our starting DE.

Instead, he will replace Misi alot IMO at LB. There is so much uncertainty for a QB when he is roming around dropping back half the time and rushing passer the other half. I imagine he would be good at sealing the edge to with his reach. Either way, its going to be entertaining.

Yeah, Coyle has got to be licking his chops with the hybrid schemes he's going to be able to use. If he can move Jordan around between a coverage LB and a pass rusher, things could get interesting in a hurry.

Imagine being down by seven, on your own 20, it's 3rd and 10, then looking at a front of of Wake, Ellerbe, Soliai, Jordan, Starks/Odrick, and Vernon, with Grimes, Patterson/Taylor, Davis, Clemons and Jones waiting for you to pass.

You know Wake and O.V. are coming off the edges no matter what. There's a CB sneaking up on the weak side - is he blitzing free and passing the coverage off to Davis?

Then imagine watching Jordan peeking around the end, or through a gap, and trying to figure out if he's going to drop into coverage or try and plant you into the ground.

This should be fun.

Dion Jordan is an evolution to the game. When TEs became pass catching threats defenses had/have no answer. Guys like Jordan now throw an extra ? at the QB during his pre snap read. They won't know if he is in man coverage or coming strong at them. Very cool, glad he is on our side

Conspiracy theories like this are almost never right.

They're not going to hold Dion Jordan away from VALUABLE practice time where he could use the opportunity to become a better football player, because they're just that secretive over his role.
