I found this interesting. The article pertains to Edwards but explains the exact same situation Ronnie will be in....

The wildcard would be the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Without an extension to the CBA, there will be no salary cap in 2010. And without a salary cap in 2010, a player with fewer than six years of service won’t be an unrestricted free agent next March.

So Edwards, who is entering his fifth NFL season, would be a restricted free agent. And the team that holds his rights will be able to retain his rights for 110 percent of his 2009 cap number, which as we understand it is in the range of $5 million.

That may help us sign him on the cheap if it goes to an uncapped year. I just hope it doesn't become uncapped forever.

I agree, uncapped season(s) would really ruin the sport imo.

yup, the salary cap, while not perfect, was a good thing for the sport. I believe it would be perfect it it had two adjustments. First make a ceiling for rookie contracts, and second make a way to prevent players from being able to cry their way out of town, this has been happening increasingly and i think they could find a way to prevent it.

Since we don't have Upshaw (RIP) or Tagliabue it will be interesting how the two new guys will work with one another.

I think the owners are going to use the leverage of the threat of going uncapped to control rookie salaries. I dont think it is going to amount much more then that. I dont expect 2010 to go uncapped, but you never know.
