World Cup question

I've been with this question for about 4 four years and nobody ever have known the answer for this one:

In every world cup, ONE team, the local team has an automatic slot in the WC without playing the qualifiers.

In the 2002 Korea Japan World Cup, there were TWO teams with automatic qualification.

Where did this extra spot came from? Which zone was removed from this spot??? :confused:

Both came from the Asian Federation: they had 4 slots in 1998, 4 in 2002, 2 of which were Japan and South Korea, the co-hosts.
