It was only a matter of time before Scott Linehan's name was officially listed as a possible coaching vacancy candidate. My question to everyone is if he indeed leaves and we have to bring somebody else in - does that set us back, perhaps another year?

It could set us back, but if Linehan leaves I don't see us bringing in someone from the outside.

Can't tell. For instance, if they promoted someone within the organization, the continuity wouldn't be a problem, but what about the comparative levels of imagination, problem solving abilities, and ability to make adjustments? Who knows.

In all likelyhood it would set us back...how far back would depend on the choice. If Baggett is promoted and utilizes Linehan's system and terminology, it could be a negligable step back (assuming that he can effectively call the plays at the right time). If someone else is brought in with a new system and terminology, we could be in for a very slow start and strong finish.

Just A Thought Guys Don't Bite My Head Off But How About If Linehan Does Leave, How About Looking At Martz Or Do You Think He'll Be A Head Coach Again Right Away. I Mean The Guy Is An Offensive Genius.

Not if this, from any earlier post of mine!

Charlie Baggett was named to the Dolphins’ coaching staff on January 25, 2005, by Head Coach Nick Saban. Baggett is a veteran of eight seasons as an NFL assistant coach, including the last five as wide receivers coach with the Minnesota Vikings where he helped put together one of the most potent offenses in the NFL over this stretch, along with current Dolphins offensive coordinator Scott Linehan.

This will be his second stint working under Saban, as he was the wide receivers/associate head coach on Saban’s Michigan State staff from 1995-98. He also worked on the same staff as Saban at Michigan State from 1983-87.

If Linehan leaves, he maybe qualified as OC.

The problem with linehan was his playcalling he kind of fixed it...

he his a great X and O's guy and has a lot of imaginations on how to run certain things (in the last few wins we went deep on obvious running situations and in a base 2 backs set and with mcmike blocking)

we will miss that a whole lot altought I am confident we can promote from within and get maybe a consultant (norv tuner... mike tice...) for the X and O's part

One thing to keep in mind is that, with apologies to Gus and Sage, we will ultimately go through a change at the QB position involving a player new to the team. As such there will be a natural continuity break coming up anyway where the new QB takes time to settle into the system and get used to the other players on offense.

As such, long term, if Linehan goes I dont think it will be catastrophic. In the short term though there will no doubt be some setbacks. The advantadge and favor that Gus has through his time in the system will be gone, the new found confidence Chambers has in knowing his routes etc will get knocked some. Hopefully this would limited though if we can move quickly and get a smooth changeover to an OC who can communicate well with the players.

Nah.

Losing Saban would be catastrophic.

Losing Houck would be depressing.

Linehan is replacable... it's Nick's team, not his. And as I've said before... I don't think Saban is going to be too upset if Linehan gets a HC job somewhere.

I'm not sure Linehan was such a good offensive coordinator that his leaving would hurt us.
Look at the talent he has at his disposal here. It would take a really poor coach to screw up here...similar to the time when Linehan was up in the coach's box where he was calling stupid plays. Every loss could be attributed to his ineptness in calling redzone plays.

Sounds like a plan to me!
