This got me thinking:

5) 1983 College Draft. NY Jets with 24th pick select Ken O'Brien quarterback from University of Nowhere. Dan Marino is drafted 3 slots later by divisional rivals Miami Dolphins. O'Brien led Jets to more playoff Seasons (3) than either Joe Namath (2) or Vinny Testaverde (2), but he seemed to peak and then decline after his first four seasons (see worst moment #11 ), and his immobility and slow release may have made him the easiest quarterback to sack in the history of the NFL. If the Jets had secretly given up on Todd, and wanted to take a quarterback Hall of Famer Marino was there for the taking. Rap on Marino was that he was "****y" , and Jet Administration under Walton felt he was not cerebral enough for the complicated Walton offense. What??? Since when did we draft quarterbacks based on SAT scores. Marino was so perfect for Jets in many ways. He was an absolute clone of Namath as a player. Cannon arm, quick release, great leadership. His personality and good looks were perfect for NY, and he would have made the Jets one of the NFL’s high profile, glamour teams for the next 15 years. Oh what might have been!!! Not to worry. Jets recover nicely in Draft and get TE Wes Howell in 4th Round and DT John Walton in Round 5. WHO???

He wouldnt have had Shula to guide his early football career, and he wouldnt have had those early weapons like Clayton or Duper.. I dont know much about the Jets back then, did they have offensive weapons? It seems the Jets had lousy coaches back then too.. Do you think that would have hampered his development?

Anyway, if he was drafted by the Jets he would probably be the most hated player of any phin fan.. Respected, but hated. Thank God the Jes goofed at that draft!

Would Peyton have been more successful if drafted by the Bengals/Browns?

Not more, AS successful.

But I see your point. I suppose Manning would still be Manning regardless of where he is at.

I just thought Marino owes alot of his early success to Shula.

I also think that Shula owes alot of his later success to Marino...

God what a question...Jets are a plague so of course he would have sucked..... ....anyways,j/k, Marino is Marino. He would have been awesome no matter where he was.

Part of what made Marino good when he did get to play was his backup Don Strock. Don was very instrumental in Dans shaping. of course I think he probably would have done alright in new York too. If I remember right at the time the Jets had some pretty good receivers.

He probably would have done alright since they both needed QBs to step in early(allowing Marino to show case his talent)

But Miami fit better because I'm not sure the Jets would have allowed him the freedom early to call his plays and develop that way . Even though we heard he did it anyways with Clayton:) (Shula was like a father playing dumb with what his young son thought he was getting away with)

I think Marino was blessed by the mentoring by Shula and Don Strock. I really think Strock was key.

borderline blasphemy

He likely still would have been successful, but maybe not to the same level. Marino stepped into a pretty good situation for a young QB. Not sure it would have been the same in NY.

I think that if Dan Marino had to put on a Jets uniform each week it would make him nausious and therefore take away some of his confidence, resulting in a far less productive career.

Dan would have been special no matter where he played.
