after reading this interesting article:

i thought to myself, if Marino was still playing, or if Bill would of come down to miami instead of Jimmy, would Marino be considered a Parcell's guy, or would he be on the outside looking in?

my biggest arguments for him being on the outside:

Marino hated to lift weights, Tuna loves a gym rat.
Marino was constantly excused from routines in practice that everyone else had to do like RUNNING.
Marino was bigger than the Dolphins, and we all know how bill feels about that...

My biggest argument for:

Ricky Williams. Tuna knew that besides all the problems with Ricky you cannot argue the fact that Ricky is one of the most uniquely talented RBs in a generation. That alone made him a parcells guy. Marino was talented beyond his work ethic.

It has been widely reported that Bill and Dan are buds, so who knows...

What do you guys think??

I don't think so. I think Jimmy and Bill have the same ego. This was Marino's team and Jimmy didn't like it, neither would have Bill. I think the whole Jason Taylor thing kind of supports that IMO.

I've thought about it. I'm sure Bill would've gotten under Marino's skin quite bit. That's just what Bill does.

Marino is everyone's guy. He can flat out play QB better than anyone else.

His ability isn't the question. Everyone know's he can play. I think it's all about the ego of the player that determines whether you're a "Parcells Guy" or not. JT is the perfect example. Everyone knows he is an elite DE, but even that wasn't enough to keep him in SoFla. Just looking at it from the surface, I Parcells and Co. would have grown a little tired of Dannyboy just relying on his talent. I could be totally wrong though.

I'm sure that they would have hated each other but respected one another. I always got the feeling that Marino didn't have the latter for Johnson.

I agree with 67, Bill has a huge ego and the whole this is Dan's team thing would have driven him crazy.

Parcells would have kicked Marino out simply because he can't stand seeing someone more important to the organization than he is. Parcells is a very egotistical person. I'm not getting on his case because of it, i'm just stating the fact.

Parcells would never have allowed a franchise to melt into a pantyhose parody for 15 years.

Sorry, but I'm continually astonished at the reputation of the Marino years on this forum. Let's see, 9 rushing attempts in the '84 Super Bowl vs. the 49ers, 8 rushing attempts vs. San Diego in the '94 playoff collapse. And dozens of examples of rushing attempts in the teens or barely into the 20s. If you guys had Excel data bases and could calculate the likelihood of success with a wimp style like that, the Marino years would acquire proper gulp focus.

The only time briefly Parcells detoured to that type of pathetic football was mid '90s with the Patriots. That team was all over the map, many weeks with proper number of rushes and other games they barely rushed at all. It screamed vulnerability. I remember detailing it while guesting on the local sports radio talk show. In the most vital games your worst tendencies are likely to surface. The 13 rushes vs. Green Bay equated to a 14 point defeat.

Marino needed a young hungry head coach. Parcells would have been ideal. Older coaches, particularly ones who have already experienced ultimate success, are far too susceptible to take the easy way out and rely on pitch and catch. Dominance in the trenches is too much work and attention to detail for an old guy. Bobby Bowden is another example. He basically ignored the running game beginning a decade ago.

No he wouldn't have been for the same reason he wasn't JJ's guy - he did not respect the running game. In team offense meetings, when the topic changed from passing game to running game - Marino would get up and walk out of the meeting. On the field - he would audible away from called run plays to throw a pass.

JJ tolerated way longer than he should have and BP would have tolerated it less.

Bill Walsh didn't like muscular QB's

I guess Drukenmiller would have been a Parcells guy

I don't think the weight room thing would apply that strictly to QB's, Tuna would have to be insane to not like Montana and Marino(Brady doesn't exactly have big guns either)

Well, I would say that Bill Parcells joins a franchise when the franchise is down for a reason. There's a method to his madness and he uses it to his advantage to run the franchise the way he wants to.

When Bill Parcells was hired for head coach in New York (Giants), the Giants were 4-12 the previous year. When he joined The NEw England PAtriots in 1993, the Patriots were 2-14 the previous year. When he joined the Jets in 1997, the Jets posted a 3-13 record the previous year. When Jerry Jones hired Parcells as head coach in 2003, the Cowboys posted a 5-11 record the previous 3 seasons. And now... waalaa.... Parcells enters a Miami franchise after posting a 1-15 record in 2007.

Given his past history, it's easy to see that Parcells puts himself in situations where franchises will give him full control to revive a "desperate" franchise.

So with that being said... I would say that Parcells would of NEVER taken the Miami job after Marino and the Miami Dolphins road to the Divisional playoff round before Jimmy Johnson retired. He would never put himself in that situation and hasn't since being in the NFL.

if bill parcels had gotten dan as a rookie, he wouldn't have had any problem keeping dan's ego and work ethic in check. but an old dog as they say... bill couldn't and wouldn't have kept around the ego driven older marino.

so rookie marino-yes
vetern 10 years plus marino-no
