I posted a thread last year about resigning in-house and not overspending on other teams free agents. I used last years Free Agency based on avg. yearly salary as an example:-

Signed - Mike Wallace-$12m, Dannell Ellerbe-$7m, Phillip Wheeler-$5m, Dustin Keller-$4.25m, Brent Grimes-$5.5m, Brandon Gibson $3.25m totalling $37m

Released - Anthony Fasano-$4m, Sean Smith-$5.5m, Karlos Dansby-$2.25m, Kevin Burnett-$2.75m, Reggie Bush-$4m, Devone Bess-$3m, totalling $21.5m.

What if we had done the same this year?

Signed - Brandon Albert $9.2m, Knowshon Moreno $3m, Louis Delmas $3.5m, Shelley Smith $2.75m, Earl Mitchell $4m, Courtland Finnegan $5.5m, totalling $27.95m

Released - Paul Soliai $6.6m, Nolan Carroll $2.5m, projected contracts - Chris Clemons $2.5m, Tyson Clabo $2.5m, Bryan Mckinnie $2.5m, John Jerry $0.7m totalling $17.3m

2013 Free Agency was a shambles. $16m deficit and IMO we would have been better off sticking with what we had.

2014 - Soliai leaving was inevitable. Better fit for 3-4 NT and IMO Starks is an overall better player. That would have left us spending just $10.7m resigning our own as opposed to external Free Agents.

I would much prefer to do this and then pick up on the 2nd wave of FA or give 'prove it' 1 yr contracts.

Moreno, Donald Penn $4.8m, Shelley Smith, Willie Colon $2m, Even Louis Delmas at $3.5m I like, but to compete with Clemons & Jones not as a replacement for one. This would have taken us to $26.75m.

I just feel depth and competition is better than overpaying and hoping someone replicates what they did on a previous team. IMO you should create a culture of having to earn a multi year contract and then reward the players that do aka Brent Grimes.

Are you worried bout the money spent or the people signed? Either way..it was the linebackers signings that ruined Miami last year. It was uncalled for and proved disastrous. Wallace signing is well worth it so is this years Albert signing, they are necessary moved. But we were worried Irie would phuc thins up and he did.

I disagree. It's all about getting the best roster to fit within the restraints of the cap. If you don't overpay other teams Free Agents, you can reward your own. This creates a fluency throughout the roster each year. I also believe it is more cohesive to team morale. Also it leaves you more to sign players in the 2nd wave of FA.

When you consider we payed Albert about the same that we could have had Penn, McKinnie & Clabo for, over a 16 game season which option would be preferable? I would prefer to go for the competition and depth, without being tied to a long term option.

I love re-signing "our own", but this team is routinely 7-9 or 8-8. It is not like the Fins are giving up Super Bowl legends in FA.

Are there a few there like Dansby and Burnett I would have kept last year? Yep. However, many I would have changed out last year and this.

I would have kept Soliai, Carroll and Clemons

It was particularly dumb not to make Carroll an offer, he signed for the eagles dirt cheap, at the very least he would have been excellent depth

We can't make it to the playoffs and your concerned about re-signing them to lead us there. There's a real good reason why our released players sign for less - their not that good to begin with!

We were 8-8 with obvious deficiencies. We could have resigned our own and then upgraded where required. We got rid of Sherman & Taylor as the playcalling and O'line was awful. Then we needed to add players to compete/improve our line and running game.

Donald Penn, Shelley Smith together with Brenner & Dallas Thomas another year on, would have provided competition and depth to the already in place Mckinnie, Clabo, Pouncey, Garner & Jerry.

Then you add Moreno with a legitimate FB in John Kuhn and we are already better going into draft, with even more cap space!

So you are championing signing Finnegan over Carroll???

We cant continue to have the same crappy talent and expect different results. The only "bad" signing I would say we've made was the LBs with swapping Wheeler and Ellerbe for Dansby and Burnett. We needed these upgrades besides the LBs, and most have paid off. We expect more from Wallace this year, but its not his fault that A) Tannehill underthrew him every single time, and B) Sherman cant call plays to save his life. We cant be cheap when it comes to winning games, and yes we couldve been a bit more strategic, but if you want the best players you must pay up.

Clemons is still available and I hope we bring him back. If not I think safety is a priority in the first 3 rounds. I'd love Calvin Pryor but unless we sign another guard I think oline is too big of a priority to pass in the first.

I have significant concerns about injuries with Finnegan, but he fits the identity of backfield Coyle desires. I seriously doubt we get 16 games from him. He is aggressive, and he hits hard. Carroll waited on the ball too much. He was not a intimidating hitter.
I reluctantly answer yes to your question.

Philbin doesn't know how to coach.. He wants to rely on talent and scheme and wants to micro manage it.. A real coach rides player to max there efforts and tell them to go have fun doin it.. Play the game and go get your Ring.. You can keep flipping players but the missing ingredient is they want to play for a players coach.. Philbin is not.. Good coaching makes mediocre great. as long as there's a skill set..
