I'm not sure if anyone has posted this aswell as me, but would you take Chargers LB Donnie Edwards? We took Seau, another Bolts castoff, and he gave us some descent years before his plethera of injuries....He's only 33, a descent stop gap for a couple of years and not a bad cap number at $3.5 million this year....IYO, would he be a bad pickup for, let's say, a 3-4 round pick this or next year?....From what I remember of his play, he's got a good motor and is descent in coverage and against the run....If we can't get Arrington, can we afford, from a draft picks perspective, to pick him up?...I say we should pull the trigger if, and ONLY if, we give them a 4th or 3rd NEXT year....We don't have many pics this year, so i think we need all we can get and have...He would work well in a 3-4, which is what the Bolts have employed for most of his career (though it was 4-3 in K.C.) Well i'd love to hear your opinions!.....Thanks...Oh and apologies if anyone already posted like this!

Yes, unless Arrington is realistic and lowers his price. It would be an upgrade either way.

The article I read on ESPN's Insider page went like this...

Edwards on the block
<Apr. 14> Chargers GM A.J. Smith confirmed to The San Diego Union-Tribune on Thursday that the team is indeed shopping Edwards. The paper speculates that the Chargers are looking to get a first-day draft pick in return for the veteran linebacker.

"If it's not attractive, nothing will be done," Smith said. "If it is, decisions will be made."

Edwards, the Chargers' leading tackler the last four seasons, is in the final year of the $18.75 million contract he signed with San Diego as a free agent in 2002. The 33-year-old has a cap charge of $3.55 million in 2006.

The Chargers are also looking to trade safety Hanik Milligan, according to ESPN.com's John Clayton.

I hope we could land him, because him, Thomas, Crowder, and *prays* Kamerion Wimberly of Fla. St. would be, if not the best, the top 5 LB Corps in the League..

This could use a merge with the thread on page two. The consensus in that version of this discussion was sign him to an incentive laden, veteran contract if he is cut but surrender NO draft picks for him.

I would not straight up trade for him, but if the Chargers want to maybe flip first rounders, add Edwards and a middle rounder (wed prolly have to give up a 7th) I would be all for it.

Remember, one of the Bolts biggest needs is WR, and in a thin draft, the Broncos likely are taking one, and we are a legit threat to take the other (between Holmes and Jackson)

If this were a possibility I would do it in a heartbeat-there will be great LBs and DBs all through the first round that we could easily get in the Chargers slot, whereas they might not have a reciever drop to them.

Good Point....Hopefully Saban will read this and get a little light bulb over his head...:D I like this idea....

Not with a first day pick maybe a 4th next year or something like that and 3.5 is pretty high for someone that old so i;d want to change it to a 1.5 mil with incentives deal probably.

Yes, Donnie Edwards is a great LB, and a great person. I have always liked this guy since his college days....but I doubt Saban would make a deal for him given the age of Zach...we need to go younger.

I'm going to give you credit. Draft picks are extremely valuable and we don't have many. The draft picks we have traded have all been associated with good football moves. The 6th for Cleo Lemon and the chance to dump the sack of nothing A.J. Feeley was solid. The 5th for Manny Wright was good value as well because he has great size and nice explosion off the ball. Hopefully he can develop into a smart, versatile player. The 2nd for Daunte is a gamble, a very big gamble that has to be made. Saban will have defend this trade for his time with the Dolphins. If Daunte does no pan out, I'm not sure that Saban would admit he made a bad move.

So this leads me to this trade for Donnie Edwards. Since draft picks are precious and we has so few of them, why would we ever trade a 4th let alone a 3rd for an aging linebacker. This guy could hit the wall at anytime now in his career. But I'm giving credit to TexanPhinatic for his wheeling and dealing attitude. The trade he has proposed is smart and would net us three football players (Donnie + swapping of 1st rounders + additional mid-round draft pick from the trade) to one (the sixteenth pick). I guess Randy Mueller is a wheeler and dealer and maybe he could pull of something like this. Though it is Saban that is going to give the okay to fire. What it really could come down to is if Saban feels that a player at 16 is of far greater value than a player he could get at 19. If that player doesn’t exist, a trade involving swapping first rounders is highly possible.

Edwards is a great LB, he is a little older but he has great talent and would be extremely effective with ZT and Crowder. I'd like him if it was a good deal like the one TexanPhinatic posted, but nothing to extreme, he's good but has age which is his only downfall.
