Hey guys, I was over at the Buc boards discussing the whole Farve issue when an interesting question popped into my head.

Would you trade the Marino Era for having a quarterback like say Tom Brady. I know, it's not a real trade scenerio, it's a little out of the box. Just was wondering what is more important in football. Greatness or superbowls? Usually they do go hand in hand, but not always.

If you had the chance to send the Fins a message so they would draft Tom Brady (three time SB champ) in 2000 but it cost you your 1983 1st round pick (Dan) would you do it?
EDIT: 2 part Question. What if the 3 SBs were guaranteed?

IMO, no. Granted 3 SBs is huge for a franchise. But Dan is argueably they best QB to play the game. You always here coaches saying "No one guy is bigger than the team or the game"... there are those exceptions and Dan is one of them. He will live on through history, and he'll be doing it in a dolphin uniform. IMO, that's greater than winning SBs.

There is a new SB champ every year. There is a new MVP every year. There is a new star rookie every year. There is almost a new everything, every year. But how often does a Dan come along? I'll tell you one thing it is NOT every year.

EDIT

Tom Brady's a great QB, but he never would have won a Super Bowl with the Miami Dolphins. Not without a solid defense (which Tom Olivadotti's teams RARELY had, except in the early 90s), and a solid running game.

As much as Brady helped win those SBs, he'd have never done it without his defense.

I dunno if any great QB could have won the SB with those Dolphin teams. a lot of the Dolphin teams in Marino's era were mediocre teams he made look better due to the offense.

Are the three superbowls guaranteed or is there still a chance that the phins could still go superbowless with brady?

If the question is "if you knew in advance you'd get three Super Bowls by making this trade", then are you insane? of course.

No player is bigger than thefranchise. But it would have never happened.

I wouldn't trade Marino because of the following:
Tom Brady is only a 3 time Super Bowl Champion because he plays for a Super Bowl Champion team and for a Super Bowl Champion Coach.
Take Marino and put him on those New England Teams and he would have also won three Super Bowls. Take Tom Brady and put him on any Dolphin Team since 1983 and Brady would not have any Super Bowls.
Having Brady would be great but he is not the type of player that could carry the team all by himself. I really only think Elway and Marino in the past 20 years were those types of QBs. Favre is good but could not carry a team they way Elway and Marino did.

 Isnt that why Favre is a SB winner? I reckon the team had to be SB winners for him to be one

What a question.

The way most of the people (90%) on this SITE love Marino and kiss is butt!

You know that answer....

Two different QBs and 2 different systems. Ive yet to see a team who has one a SB that I dod not think Marino could have stepped in and won on that team.

And yes Id take having a guy like Marino over getting a SB. Marino gave us 17 years. In 17 years no one will care about the Pats or the 3 SBs they won. There have been like 40 SB champs. There has been one Marino. The Dolphins have won 2 Superbowls. How often do you hear about them? As soon as the last undefeated team loses every year you dont hear squat.

17 years and no SBs is better than winning an SB in that time? I disagree entirely. In 17 years nobody will care about the Pats or the 3 SBs they won? You're insane. People still talk about that Cowboys team of the 90s that won 3 Super Bowls in 4 years, and that was well over a decade ago.

Yea, Miami won two Super Bowls...how often do you hear about them? EVERYBODY talks about the undefeated Dolphins.

As for your first paragraph, I have no idea what you're talking about. You've never seen a team that won a super bowl?

i wouldn't trade the class and greatness marino brought to them game for a whiny little brat like brady regardless of how many rings he has.

I'll agree with the sentiment that Brady probably would not have won 3 Super Bowls with the Dolphins.

but some of the sentiment in this thread that you'd still take Marino over winning championships is making me laugh. I'd doggystyle a porpoise if it guaranteed Miami a super bowl win.

You would have to trade the team and coaches as well as Brady and Marino. You trade Marino and Brady and Marino ends up with three or more Superbowl rings and Brady ends up with the Dolphins and no rings and a mediocre career. Brady is good but he is no Marino and other than SuperBowl rings will never hold many, if any NFL records. Brady is the Quarterback of a superbowl team, Dan Marino is a legend!

few seem to ever credit the fact that Brady had a shutdown defense and in Marino's era, most of his defenses weren't even in the top 10.

In the early 90s they started to play solidly and quite uncoincidentally, those were the best 90 teams he played on (including the one that went 12-4 and the one that went to the AFC Championship)

Good question. We'll make it a 2 parter. 1st part is no guarantee but still an amazing QB would you do it? (things to consider: Pats will take a big blow w/o Brady. You still have Ricky and a top D. The Div and a bye wouldn't be hard to imagine)

2nd part is- yes you do get SB 36, 38, and 39, would you do it now?
