I was the first caller on his program as I was driving up from South Florida to Orlando if you caught the beginning of his show....He was saying that Ricky was ripped for leaving and all that, but why is it okay that a guy who has put all this work into an organization for 12 years is on the brink of being thrown out on the street and not well respected, and despite getting a pension...it only does so much...all the money in the world probably wont help Timbo walk normal ever again....I'm sure he'd want to give that back....Everyone always wants to talk about the players screwing over organizations and it seems to be okay that the player is cut after his long service. He said (and I agreed with him too on this) that if he never brought up Timbo, no one wouldve wanted to talk about it....(I did, I actually didnt get a chance to get on Boog Sciambi's show to talk about Timbo, and he was just talking about the Heat...this was seconds after i heard about the Traylor signing)

I called LeBatard and said that Timbo should be considered for the ring of honor because of his long career (the last shula link), was never selfish, took paycuts, clogged lanes to make Zach Thomas and other LBs look good (dont get me wrong, ZT is a heckuva player, but Timbo made his job a bit easier)...and because he doesnt rack up the stats...not to mention he was a great guy from what we all saw.

And of course after I ran my mouth, I was hung up on...and what did LeBatard say?....

"I wish we still had Matt on the line so we can get his comments on this"

I kid you not....thanks producer for hanging up when I was done talking....jerk :fire:

Timbo is the prime example of why contract hold outs are fine with me.....

I totally agree.

NFL players should scratch, fight and claw for every damn penny they can get from their owners.

The NFL is making a boatload of cash off the players backs...and their health. They should do whatever they can to get whatever they can whenever they can.

ON a side not...I hope the players rip the owners a new one in the new C.B.A...then again...with a Tagliabue lacky like Gene Upshaw doing the C.B.A. negotiating I'm surprised the players get paid at all.

Just to put it in perspective.

How much money has Tim Bowens made over the last 11 seasons? He made quite a bit. So no I am not worried about his pension or finances after this.

If he doesn't have any finances or"pension" to fall back on that's his own fault.

He was a very respected and respectable guy.

Some of you are looking at this the wrong way. Normally I agree with the contracts arguments.

But on this one, come on the guy can't perform and hasn't been able to perform for a while now. Why should he be paid to rehab his back. They have paid him the last couple years to rehab.

There is no reason for the Phins to not cut him, only because of the fact that he isn't doing anything for the team.

You can't put everyone in the ring of honor and frankly Bowens career just wasn't good enough.

I think Timbo was one of the unsung heroes of their D for many years BUT how much did he make last year? How many games did he play? While I agree teams cut some guys with short notice this wasn't the case with Timbo. He has missed a few games because of his back before and last year the team carried him and his salary. Sorry but he isn't being thrown to the curb. The way the system is set up these guys can rake in teh money in their prime because teams can cut them when they are older. That's the way the union wanted it but yet they'll complain when one of their own gets cut. If he wants to stay he can put on a headset and help out at practice as an asst coach.:D

TBowens was a good dolphin , no doubt. He was not at the exalted level to merit being in the ring of honour IMO.

He could have been if he had the commitment needed to get into and stay in superior shape. I know some won't like that , but he simply did not get as much out of his career as he could have , and a large part of that was his own doing.

Saying that , he was very good and I only wish him well .

Why, because he didnt have 12 sacks a season? There's more to his position than the statistics....

He's played at a solid level, probably above average....for longer than Zach Thomas and Jason TAylor...his position by nature doesnt have the stats to show for it...

What players do you know (other than some great QBs) that have been on a single team for 12 years? He is an ironman....

Some of you missed my point...an argument is out there saying that since he has made so much money that no one should care about how he has broken down....no one cares from a person-to-person perspective that Timbo's body has broken down playing for 12 years, all for one team....Do you honestly think that it's a-ok to cut a player in an unceremonious manner (as I'm expecting) that probably will never walk normally again for the effort he has put forth to this organization?

He works just as hard if not harder than anyone on that team...and you have to to get that back to rehab...and it's just not happening, and he's frustrated.....

Tim Bowens is not just anyone....he was a hell of a player while he was here and didnt get a lot of respect...IMO he was just as valuable as Keith Sims or a Richmond Webb on the offensive side of the football.

Read this opinion right here...I agree with this guy whole-heartedly...

LeBatard is a moron on this. Ricky quit the NFL to smoke weed! You can't compare that to a team cutting a player.

I don't care if Bowens played for Miami for 12 days, 12 hours, or 12 years! Bowens took a job as an NFL player coming out of college. HE KNEW WHAT HE WAS GETTING INTO! That means that at anytime you may be cut. That is the downside of the job. The upside is millions upon millions of dollars in salary. Take the bad with the good.

Comparing it to Ricky and Ricky's need to smoke weed and live in tents and not pay child support is so stupid on so many levels!

I dont agree with ricky's case in particular...i shouldve clarified....I just agree with the whole idea that when an athlete retires (a Rob Konrad for example) and gets criticized ...as he was by the raiders...even though he had a solid reason of why he wanted to go (he saw somethign he didnt like in a recent physical and was concerned with his health)....he gets ripped....but an organization gets slack from the fans almost always...

Troy Brown was unceremoniously cut by the pats and it looked like for awhile he wouldnt get re-signed....you didnt see a LOT of outrage by New England fans during the time he was a FA...that guy put in at least 11-12 years for the pats, played DEFENSE for them...and he got no respect...in fact he had to take a pay cut...

Guys like Troy Brown and Timbo deserve more respect than what their organizations give them....

Great post. I agree with you about Tim Bowens should DEFINITELY be considered for the ring of honor. He doesn't have the stats to show because the majority of DT's aren't good for getting sacks but opening up and breaking apart the defensive line for guys like Zach Thomas to get past the Offensive Line... There is no doubt about it that TimBo made Zach Thomas a better player, and TimBo made a lot of people around him better. That's a helluva a lot more better and impressive that tackles, sacks, etc.

Bowens was a tremendous athlete but even more a great person and loyal team player. He is argueably the most loyal player on this team, and I'm really going to hate to see him go if that turns out to be the case. I have so much respect for this and think he's had a tremendous career here in Miami. I believe he made the Pro Bowl in 2002, and I'm glad the league recognized he deserved it while his stats don't look impressive to the naked eye or unintelligent eye (again because he's a DT). The guy took pay cuts, restructured, and there basically isn't a thing he would do for this team. Tremendous athlete. Tremendous person. Tremendous career. I definitely think he should be considered in the ring of honor.

It's NOT a 2-way street! The organization is going to go on forever! Troy Brown won't.

If I work for IBM and I quit, IBM isn't shutting their doors. The organization is bigger than the person. It is the same in the NFL. The organization which provides a "lifestyle" to a person/player. A job so that person can provide for their family always will have final say if they want to continue to employ that person.

Troy Brown signed up for the NFL. The NFL didn't go out begging Troy Brown to come join. Their is a difference!

These players (Bowens, Brown..etc) KNEW WHAT THEY WERE GETTING INTO! They aren't having the rugs pulled out from under their feet. This is the lay of hte land and they knew it when they took a job in the NFL.

And the "respect" thing is week. His "respect" is his multi-million contract he got for YEARS from the Pats. That's RESPECT! The fact the Pats don't want to keep paying out that kind of money to him isn't a sign of "lack of respect" its a business move!

These aren't supreme court judges. No company is entitled to offer job security for life. From craddle to grave!

The Pat's have won 3 out of the last 4 SB's, the fans are'nt going to b*tch about anything. Troy Brown has 3 rings and made a buttload of money.
Please.

True, but I think that Bowens has at least earned the respect equal to those on the ring of honor.
