I was looking through some Dolphins youtube videos when I stumbled on to some old Cecil Collins LSU highlights, which made me look for an image of him on google and I ran into this old Sports Illustrated article about our 1999 draft.

JJ was so reckless. I'm not just talking about drafting Cecil Collins but the whole damn draft. After really soaking that article in, all I could think was - Well, here was the beginning of the end. This makes me value our front office and coaching staff even more now and really appreciate the way they do business. What do you guys think?

Just thought I'd share.

Wow. Not only does that seem like a million miles away, but none of the players mentioned stuck around for much longer than a cup of coffee.

Michael

Reugamer is still in the league and plays for the Giants. Collins was a worthwhile gamble in the 5th rd.
If he had gotten his head together he could have been great. Physically he was a faster version of Emmitt Smith.
On the balance JJ really only had success drafting defensive players. He wasn't very good a picking offensive talent.

You're right. He built us quite a defense with many memorable players and I can appreciate that. Just something about the whole vibe of that article made me want to go shower or something though. He never seemed to care much about character.

He coached for the U and then the Cowboys.
His huddles had more impressive rap sheets then most cell blocks.

Jimmy Johnson was the John Gruden of RB's, but I don't blame him for trying to address an important position. He made some bad picks sure, but so has every other coach/gm for Miami. We could have done a lot worse than Jimmy Johnson. He did at least bring us players that helped us win our division.

it's been said before. amazing at drafting defense - borderline retarded on offense. at least he had cool hair.

Konrad was pretty good when he was here, wasn't he?

I actually have a hard copy of the specific issue this article comes from. The cover is of David Robinson and the Spurs winning the title in 1999 with a small picture at the top of the TSN cover that says something about the Dolphins/Super Bowl.

The article itself has a picture of Cecil Collins, JJ Johnson and Rob Konrad in their jerseys on a field.

Pretty good as a receiver, when he was healthy, but he never came close to what JJ envisioned him to be...another Daryl Johnston.

Good Lord now I know why Wannstink was so bad at drafting, his mentor was pretty crappy at it too.

the worst part of this was when we drafted Eddie freakin Moore and he got his butt kiicked aat ihop. when we drafted john Avery i was less then impressed with jimmy.
