There is no penalty for not interviewing a minority for the GM position, that only applies to the head coaching position. Obviously the candidates interviewed last year(minus Spielman) were the most qualified men out there, so from a PR standpoint the Dolphins can fall back on last years interviews as a front.

But make no mistake, nobody but Saban made this decision, he is well connected throughtout the NFL and is obviously very familar with Randy Mueller.

But the GM is the one who makes the decison on Salary and how many players and how much..we could have pushed salary cap last year and been in cap jail this year. I'm just saying thanks to Spielman for not signing the overpriced players and ensuring we could do something this year and Saban benefitted..that's all I'm saying. Speilman's gone now, but still thanks, we get to change the team more and push in the future. Could you imagine Saban going to Tenn. ??? -- We still have most of our core and able to add this many players, the GM did a good job last year setting up this year. At least acknowledge that much..

That's probably true...........and that's where Mueller was fired from so, the rumors must have not been all good.

Maybe they had a close relationship or were well acquainted? That certainly didn't come across at the press conference.

It's strange in some ways and it really doesn't even matter, the topic of this thread was to show that Rick set up the Dolphins so that they were able to make moves and be active in FA-gency. A point that has been well proven.

This year, when Hudson Houck takes the same players that Rick assembled for our o-line last year and turns them into good players, I'm sure Nick will get all the credit, I and a few others see what was being done and will continue to bring it to light.

The OL will be the true test of Speilman, specifically Carey and whether or not he develops... obviously Houck will get the credit for any improvements, which im sure he deserves, but for those of us that see the bigger picture, itll finally let us know whether Speilman made the right choices as GM...

If you look at the OL as a whole tho, you have to wonder how involved Speilman was with bringing in James and McDougle, cuz those are easily the most experienced/highly regarded OL we have and give Houck 2 guaranteed NFL caliber players to work with (and remember 2 out 5 isn't bad, when you have about 8 other players fighting for those 3 spots)

Saban you are benefitting: plus you get a lot of good players from before, we should be competitive this year, and set for a good run next year.

The point is there no penalty, so using the front of last years interviews is an easy PR move.

How is Saban very familar with Randy Mueller? Saban has coached in the NFL and has friends all over the league..its a fraternity. Besides the fact they were in New Orleans at the same time, Saban could make calls all over the league to get opinions of Mueller as he did with Mike Holmgren.

Mueller is well respected throughout the league and Saban surely must have known quite a bit about him to hire him so quickly.

Regarding the point of the thread, you can credit Rick all you want, it won't matter. History will record this as Nick Saban's success if he truly turns this team around. History will reflect that Spielman's negatives far outweighed his positives here in Miami and that he was part of the problem not the solution, no matter how you and few other fans view it.

I'm sure thats part of it, but some seem to be under the impression that Saban coached at some obscure college somewhere and never has had contact or made connections at the NFL level, hes coached in this league more than once and knows coaches all over this league.

Memo to MDFINFAN:

We were in cap trouble until Saban had to trade off Surtain, many of the free agents we were able to pull in at good prices had much to do with these players knowing they were going to be playing with Saban.

Boston would not be here at a good price if not for Saban, he turned down more money from Tennessee.

What does our cap space have to do with it?? We were in trouble with the cap because of DW not RS. Speilmen was only GM for one season, a season in which we had the worst record in 39 years. Is that because of RS??? No, it was many things. The worst thing you can say about RS is he was handled in the draft by Minn. But I believe it was inexperience more then anything. RS will find another home and someday make a very good GM. He's samrt and a tireless worker, he just lacks experience. Saban wants the best possible person at every position and Mullere has a decent track record and far more experience. Thats why RS was replaced IMO.
