Fins WR coach Ben Johnson was called out by Steve Smith (4 hrs 45 min into the Combine on Saturday for those who DVRd it).

Smith - "I found out that the WRs are breaking down on the dig routes because the WR coach of the Miami Dolphins is telling them to break down. Other than Landry, I don't see them Dolphin receivers make too many plays."

Eisen - "Kenny Stills now, right?"

Smith - "I like Kenny, but Kenny learned from uh... from Sean Payton. I just telling you. You can't break down on the dig route. You gotta just Cadillac turn that thing and keep it moving. Come on Rich. Hey, that's what, WRs that's what you're supposed to do. Keep going."

So it seems like our new WR coach doesn't have a freaking clue about what he's doing.

If someone could please explain to me just what the hell he is talking about, maybe I could respond.
Smith made a joke how our receivers suck. Said the WR coach and the head coach don't know what they are doing. Which is totally irrelevant.

I'll have to see this statement in its entirety before I can respond properly. Was this really a joke?

Basically saying that our WR coach is telling our receivers to chop their feet at the break instead of making that cut and hitting the gas

Maybe Steve wanted the WR coaching job in Miami and was turned down.

*sigh* it's always something or other. Now I'm not a fan of Steve Smith, his bullying of and violence towards teammates and the impression I get that he's closer to being a douchebag than not. However, he is an accomplished and skilled receiver and I'd suspect he knows what he's talking about - at least in this case.

Steve Smith was a great player. However he was always a loud mouth and instigator on the field so not surprising that he is the same on TV.

I suppose that makes sense. Does "break down" mean "slow down"? In which case, that doesn't seem like the right advice for this route:

"Dig (6): The dig (or square-in) is a deep, inside breaking cut with the receiver (or tight end) pressing up the field, sinking his hips and breaking back to the middle of the field between a depth of 12 and 15 yards. The key for the receiver is creating separation at the top of the stem by pinning the defensive back to the outside. A top concept in the intermediate passing game versus both zone and man coverage that caters to top-tier route-runners such as A.J. Green. "

It really does depend on coverage . In zone you're unlikely having to breakdown. Tight man you may want to to help break away from the covering defender.

Also. They (NFL Network) had Steve Smith commenting on the O Line technieque when they were doing drills. That one surprised me.

Steve Smith is right here. Most coaches teach their players to break down and chop a few steps before accelerating into the dig. It doesnt make any sense, you want to sink your hips then explode into the dig with one cut, like Smith is saying.

Steve Smith was a great WR but sometimes great players needs to shut up when talking about others.

This is the New Orleans Saints practicing the dig route in 2015. Notice how the receivers are breaking down, being precise in their route running and not "Cadillac turn that thing."
