Wright Signs, Bowens Extended

i don´t think holliday is the odd man out, he will surprise a lot of people this year, vickerson is in trouble

I am really glad Bowens got an extension. While a lot of the people here were calling for his head, I always wanted him to stay. Why? Because he is a good, not great, but good football player. Plus he solidifies our DE position:

DE: Vonnie Holliday - David Bowens
DT: Keith Traylor - Manuel Wright
DT: Kevin Carter - Larry Chester/Jeff Zgonina
DE: Jason Taylor - Matt Roth

I admit I have have been tough on him. I just haven't sen him live up to his full potential. Maybe this year he proves me wrong.

The guy had 7 sacks, 52 tackles, I don't how many early forced throws on the QB in his first year starting and you don't see the potential..

Holliday over Bowens? Bowens did a very good job at strating last year and i don't see him being a backup to Holliday. Holliday will prob be our main backup at DE. He could also see alot of time at the DE when we are at 3-4.

Where are ll those people who thought Bowens was the odd man out in this defense?
Right here. But situations change. His cap number a few months ago was too high IMO for a #3 DE in our system. We asked him to restructure and he said no thanks..... this was awhile back and I thought him declining to restructure was basically him being escorted out the door. This was also when TimBo was coming back and Chester was still reported to be coming back....

I wanted to sign him to an extension to lower his cap number but when he refused, I was definately not in favor of keeping here...... especially at 2.whatever million. Its great we signed him to a cheap extension because we need depth on our Dline and with TimBo and Chester not in happyville, it seems Carter will get more snaps at DT and we need another DE in the rotation.

Therefore now I am happy with the signings beacuse we are losing TimBo and Chester, but if you asked me the same question 5 months ago when Bowens did not want to restructure and TimBo and Chester were reported back and their health concerns were not negative and we just signed Holliday and Carter and drafted Roth..... I would have told you the same exact thing about Bowens being not only the odd man out, but the 4th/5th string DE behind JT, Carter, Roth, and maybe Holliday.

I thought D. Bowens was history. No way he was going to be kept at his salary cap hit... and I guess that part is still true. :)

Hey, if Saban sees potential for him as a DE/OLB hybrid? Or even just a pass-rush specialist? Works for me. I love the depth this gives, and I want to see that cap space help used to sign Schulters at Safety, or a more humble and cheaper Ty Law.
