Y. Bell was right

The play of the defense was the most disappointing. After the 2 embarrassing losses last season I really felt the defense had this game circled on their calendars and I expected the D-line to dominate the game.
The defensive line, being comprised of the heaviest players, is the most susceptible to the exhaustion caused by facing the no-huddle. I suspect that's why Starks, Odrick, and Merling were non-existent.

The key guy to watch is Randy Starks. He didn't start the game, which was odd. Merling did. Then when watching the game Starks looks like a "shot" player with nothing left in the tank. I know I know the whole defense looked bad, but to not open the game, tells me the coaches saw something too.

Starks has made our defense tick the past couple years. If he is on the downhill, it might be a long year

With the lockout, I think we're going to see wide variation in how in-shape these players are. Someone like Starks could be in horrendous shape right now, compared to where he usually is this time of year.

I think any thinking about how players and teams are performing right now has to take into consideration the possible effects of the lockout.

Not sure why the incredible falling down of the Defense falls soley on Sparano?

What disturbs me, as the OP pointed out, Tammy Buttchin had all freakin day to pass, and that was with a very bad O-line and a center that has no business playing center to begin with....yet Magic Mike couldn't dial up a defense to get that ****y little ******* on his behind? That disturbs me LOTS!!!

sorry dude I can't agree with your statement on a "very bad o-line"

you will once again see bellichek find the best Oline he can put on the field, and Soldier come alive. Brady has made his entire career off the success of his Oline. Why do you think they key is to hit him? Why doesn't everyone do it? Because they cant.

You must've missed Detroit make a complete mockery out of that O-line 2 weeks ago then?
And that was BEFORE they lost their center.

I agree the O-line has made both Billicheat and his boy into the story they are, but it has already been written about ad-naseum they just arent that good at this juncture this year.

By the next time we see them, they will probably be gelling into a fine unit, which means we will be ROYALLY screwed up in NE.

to me bell needs to keep his mouth shut...he looks slow and old out there...the whole defensive unit should be held accountable

I have no idea why Merling started. You can see that Starks always gets more push than Merling and is simply the superior player. That being said, Starks is looking slower this year. He may not have maintained his conditioning in the offseason this year.

Merling is a stiff. There is no reason for him to play anytime.

preseason means nothing

I agree 100%. The defense had 0 spark. The patriots oline was weakened and we could not capitalize on their rookies. That RT Yeatman had Wake's jersey quite a few times and the flags stayed in the refs pocket. Yeatman held but not long enough to draw the flag. Solai was not getting any pressure against Connolly. The other guys were neutralized. They simply handled us. The question I have now was it because the have better athletes than we do, or was it due to the defensive guys thinking they could just show up and give a half hearted effort. Both extremely disturbing. Monday night football at home in game #1 and we come out flat? WTF?

preseason means nothing

That defensive performance against the Pats offense meant nothing. Your guys played great but our defense is not that bad. By the time we meet again, the defense will be on track. I am not saying we will win up there, but I think we have a shot with our new offense to pull off an upset if the refs call a clean game up there...We moved the ball against your defense at will.

The coaches sure have a tough time trying to figure out who to play...the fat out of shape players that can make plays, or the younger guys who are in shape that cannot make one.
