Hello everyone, I am a fairly new poster. I get on these forums daily and read the updated about what is going on, but I rarely ever post, as you can see by my post count.
I wanted to give a little background on myself before I begin. I am 22 years old and I have been a Phin fan for as long as I can remember. The very first game I can remember is the Super Bowl in 98', Packers and Denver. About a year later I met a friend who said, "I like the Miami Dolphins!" So I said, "Me too!" And that is why I am a Phin fan, I know, not a very good reason, but a reason nevertheless. I live in New Mexico, so I suppose you can say I can pick any team I wanted since New Mexico has no professional Sports team. Most people around here are Dallas fans (Boo!). However, I digress...

I started really paying attention in the 07' season. What a great year to get interested in football! My team was the laughing stock of the league.. 1-15.. I remember the 08' season starting and hearing about a new head coach, I didn't have much faith to be quite honest. And before I knew it, we were 11-5, won the division, were using a formation called "The Wildcat" that I had never heard of, or seen. So I was very happy to say the least, I thought all of our troubles were over! Than over the last 3 years, I don't really need to explain... You guys have to also realize, at the time I didn't know very much about football. I understood how it was played and everything, but not much about history, franchise quarterbacks, etc..
I for one was a huge Chad Henne fan, I just couldn't understand why one game he would look so good and than the next have us all shaking our heads and throwing **** at the TV. Anyway, over the years i've been watching i've been reading into the past of football, watching countless hours of NFL Network, learning about the great players of the game, what teams had accomplished, who was good, who wasn't, etc... And now I can say I understand how everything works quite a bit more now.
Now if you're still with me, this brings me to the point of the thread. You see, I wasn't really alive when the dolphins were anything relevant (born in 89'). All I have are old clips of Dan Marino and "The Perfect Season" And i've done all the research I really can. And while the Dolphins appeared to be something really great for quite awhile before the 2000's, I ask you this question for you older fans. It may seem stupid, and you may think it's obvious, however when I ask these questions I really mean it.
Were the Dolphins really THAT good, or are the fans making them seem greater than they were? Was Dan Marino really the best passer ever, or was he just the guy who couldn't win the big one? What did analysts say about the Dolphins over the years, you know, like when you turn on NFL Network and all you hear is how amazing Tom Brady is on a daily basis, was it like that for the Dolphins to some aspect? Or were they an after thought?
You see I really envy you guys who were old enough to really see how great the Dolphins were, to actually know the feeling of YOUR team winning a Super Bowl, I hope that one day I can too feel that same excitement, shoot I haven't even seen them win 1 playoff game yet. Still I will stand beside them.
I would really appreciate your guy's input. =)

It's true, Marino made our offense that good, any time he was under center, you were never out of a game. It's not only the number of games he won, but how he won them that made him great. Yes football is a team sport, but every once in awhile there's a player who puts the team on his back and makes everyone on the field with him a better player...that's who Dan was for the Dolphins...but (and there was always a but) lack of a solid D and/or a 1st tier running back always held the team back as a whole.

Cudos to you Archon22 for sticking with this team through the hard years, especially w/out having the benefit of experiencing the greatness that Miami has had in the past...that says a lot about you that you don't jump to the teams that are hot now!! Miami's time is coming again...hopefully sooner rather than later.
 
I'm just a bit too young for the glory days of the 70s. I was in 3rd grade when Marino was drafted. In those days I would watch a lot of NFL films with my Father on ESPN. I was raised with sports. A few months earlier I watched the Dolphins blow a 2nd half lead against the Redskins in the Super Bowl. It was heartbreaking, especially at that age but I thought it was always going to be like that, playing in Super Bowls. You don't stop to think how hard it is to get there at that age. I remember shutting out the Jets for the AFC championship and then a Super Bowl that it didn't become clear the Dolphins were going to lose until well into the 4th quarter. That was a fun day unitl Riggins TD run and the frustration of the offense not doing anything. Every time I see that game's highlights I think it's gong to end differently. It's pretty exciting when your tied in a Super Bowl and you get a 98 kickoff return for a TD. It's exciting to win AFC championships or go 14-2. It use to be a real dissapointment if the Dolphins didn't go to the playoffs in the old days it was expected. I remember for a while people would talk about the annual December collapse and now you are lucky if you have any hope left October. That 2008 season you saw was business as usual except in the old days from opening day you thought you had a chance to win the division, not OMG it's December and we are still in it.
 
I was born in 1993. When I was very little, I met Dan Marino and he signed my football. I've been a Dolphins fan since. However, I didn't seriously get into football until 2007 as well. I made my account here in early 2008 and loved this place ever since. I had to make a new account because my other one wasn't working.

The Dolphins have basically done nothing but lose for 19 years of my life, but I know one day they will turn it around. Keep the faith.

Welcome man.

I'm 30 and haven't seen a Dolphins Super Bowl in my entire life. Back in the late 90s and early 2000s, the Dolphins were routinely favored to make the playoffs. They'd even be at the top of "Power Polls", be interviewed by Jim Rome, and maybe even have some airtime on ESPN.

I don't care about all of the superficial stuff regarding the Dolphins. All I want as a fan is to feel like Pats/Giants fans are feeling right now. I just want it once. I want to feel what it's like to have the team you've rooted for forever be one of two teams standing.
 
I wasn't born until '74, so I can't speak for the "Perfection Era" ...

But, YES - Dan Marino was the goods!!!

It didn't matter how many points we were trailing by, we had Danny! We were gonna come back! Confidence was always high!

I was born in '71 and have a baby shirt that had the Miami Dolphins on it. That's where it started for me. I followed the excitement and the games as soon as I could understand what I was watching.
Dan was a football god. Down 3 tds in the 4th quarter? it didnt matter, and as a fan of Marino you ALWAYS knew you had a chance to win. Dan was that passionate, fiery about his team. He yelled at receivers all the time when therr was a missed route or a drop. But I'll say this. Dan's ball was almost always right where it needed to be. Even the most diehard Steelers fan I know said Dan placed that ball perfectly almost every time. Please watch his games, his highlights. He even was seen as one of the most elusive qbs ever. Not by running or Tebowing bullrushing his way around, but by a little step to the left or right, making defenses leap right past him.
He never did have the right mix of a great rb or defense to help him along. And the rules qbs play with protecting them today were NOT in effect when he played.
As one member here has on his signature by Bill Walsh-"Jow Montana was a product of the system, Marino WAS the system. Pretty good praise !
Us fans are always rushing about trying to figure out who the next Marino will be to get us back to the SB. We may never find him, and I doubt we will. But we do believe that one year we'll have the right personnel to complete the mission. We all argue at times as to who those players are that we need, but it's all in wanting the right mixture to win the SB. Hope I helped.

Having watched them consistantly since '78, I can say the nice thing about the Dolphins were that you could feel confident that they would win 9-10 games for sure. They would surprise and win a couple they shouldn't and then lose a couple they should win.....Bum Phillips said it best about Shula (and the Dolphin teams)....He (Shula) could take his'n and beat yor'n or yor'n and beat his'n.
Those were definately the "glory days" of Dolphin football. I sure hope were on the cusp of being there again.

You mention the 72 undefeated team but you need to realize that the 73 team is the best in Dolphins history. They lost a tough game at Oakland and a meaningless last game of the season.

Hang in as we all hope they get back to the once stellar franchise they were.
 
Having been a fan since their last Super Bowl victory when I was 8, all I can say is: what a ride!! Alternately transcendent (Shula on the sidelines, Marino on the field, Fake Spike) and gut-wrenching (Miracle At The Meadowlands, 1-15, Ray Lucas.) So help me, I can't wait for the 2012 season to start!

I fully understand what you are saying in regards to the Cowgirls. I grew up just North of "The City Different" and everybody I knew was either a Cowgirl fan or a Donko fan. I of course chose neither....actually, I was playing YAFL (Our version of Pop Warner) back in 72,73 and was indeed on the Dolphins. The rest is history.

There are more NMers in here. Locke I know is from the Duke City, and every now and then I see another person claiming to be from there.


Enjoy. You have chosen the correct team, maybe the wrong ,era, but the correct team. Our time is coming again I promise you.
 
I was 13 when we went undefeated.

South Florida was like the Center of the Universe in those days. Everything the pats are now, we were then, maybe even more so because of parity. We were football's "it" team par excellence. The bills and pats were 2-12 bottom-feeders and the jets and colts were declining fast. We OWNED the AFC East for half of 2 different decades.

It is hard for the young guys to imagine days when the Miami Dolphins were the "face" of the NFL... DEFINED the league... but it was definitely like that.

I went to games in ATL and NOLA in the 80's-90's and there would be more Dolphin gear-clad fans in the stands than fans in the home team's garb, and it wasn't close. Aqua was EVERYWHERE.

We were Cowboys/Packers/Steelers magnitude as a brand. A true "national" team. I have heard that overseas, among older foreign fans of "American football", we are STILL revered on that level despite the last few years.

Some apparel, souvenirs, etc. is made for "select" NFL teams. Back in the day WE were one of the "selects". EVERYTHING ALWAYS was available in Miami Dolphins' colors. Now it's always pats, Saints, Cowboys, Steelers, Packers and we are rarely represented.
 
Thanks for the replies guys, I appreciate the input. It's hard to even imagine the Dolphins being a dominate team now-a-days, it's very depressing. Hopefully things will turn around quickly and Joe Philbin can be the catalyst for it! =)
